Arrgh this Powerbook is driving me nuts

I have two powerbooks, both purchased off lease from the same company. They didn't come with a restore CD but I'll go out and buy a retail 10.5 disk if that's a solution.

Both are 1.67 ghz 15 inch Powerbooks, the last revision ones with the 1440x960 screen and stuff. They both are having the exact same problem. When I close the lid, they will not sleep, the computer stays running. ALSO, if I manually put them to sleep, the computer hangs immediately. No kernel panic, no icon, nothing, the screen stays on and the cursor is frozen.

I'm then forced to turn them off by holding down the power button for 5 seconds, but then if I try to turn them back, the booting hangs at the grey loading screen with the spinning circle. I THEN have to run fsck after rebooting into single user mode, where it finds a bunch of errors and repairs them. Then I can boot back up, but still no sleep.

Any ideas? There's no essential software on either of them, so I'm perfectly happy to buy a copy of OS X 10.5 and wipe them and start from scratch, if that's an option and if it'll likely resolve my issue.

Any ideas? :frown:

edit: there are no USB things or anything plugged in.

They told me to bring it into a Mac store. Real helpful. Or did you think I hadn't called them yet? Sorry to ruin your "gotcha" moment [edit]

FYI, for anyone else with the same problem that stumbles upon this thread, delete and reinstall fixed it. I did notice the previous install was formatted in UFS for some ungodly reason. I doubt that's what caused it, but whatever, it's fixed now. :)

Lets keep this civil please, Thank you.

Glad it's fixed. How does that lappie run Leopard compared to my C2D (Santa Rosa)? Comparable?

I've played with both of them now (was agonizing over the choice of a Macbook or going with the cheaper G4) and the Macbook is SO much faster. Opening menus, shutting down and restarting, converting Itunes stuff. A lot of times when benchmarks say something is X % faster I won't notice it, but in this case I could actually tell.

In the end I went with the G4 because A) I got a REALLY good deal on it, so I spent less than half of what I would on a Macbook, and B) All I use it for is the occasional Starcraft LAN party, or when I feel like web surfing in a coffee shop instead of at my desk. Also (and I borderline hate myself for saying this) I REALLY like the fiber optic keyboard. A Macbook Pro is way out of my price range so if I wanted that, it was the G4 or nothin'.

Also keep in mind, the G4 is not slow at all. I just compared it unfavorably with the C2D, but the difference wasn't night and day. This thing (now that I seem to FINALLY have it working properly) is definitely good for a few more years before it feels annoyingly slow, assuming stuff keeps getting made in Universal Binary. *fingers crossed*
