just about when windows xp is booting into gui mode the drive has trouble reading and just clicks and whirrs for like 2 minutes then it loads explorer and does the same thing for another 8 minutes... arggh... had this problem a few days ago, a scan fixed it but now it's back!

it's an ibm 75gxp desk star aka death star. been running for 2.5 years and every summer it screws up and it's not even that hot here! rarely goes above like 28 celsius. maybe that's why it has a high failure rate since other places get a lot hotter during summer

It's a 75GXP.. the notorious dying drive.

I would replace it ASAP, it is going to die.

Unfortunately, I also have a 75GXP that does some pretty weird sh!t sometimes.. I hope to God it doesen't die before I can replace it.

I've also had mine for about 2.5 years. We're the lucky ones, most died after about 6 months.

Why can't I have a HD fail on me? I never had one fail or even acting up. If it died, it would be replaced with a new one under warranty. Maybe a bigger, better drive. But it's going strong as never. That's what I call bad luck.

It's not bad luck.

Go to any HDD forum and ask about the IBM 75GXP. They were horrible drives.
