Umm... it may be the NIC... are you getting a 169.x.x.x address ?
Try pinging 127.0.0.1 or the router itself ?

Whenever you get a 169.x.x.x address, you need to make sure you are performing the proper boot sequence... modem --> router --> PC. Make sure you give it at least 30 seconds in between. Turn everything off and reset what you can... then back on in that order with time in between.
Alternatively, if this still doesn't work, you can assign a static private IP to your NIC instead of using DHCP (where it is apparently failing now). Just gotta make sure your router has acquired an IP from the modem.
EDIT>> First thing's first... make sure device manager isn't showing any problems with your NIC. Make sure the drivers are good.
As stated above, on your router settings, check that the number of DHCP machines allow room for one more to get assigned. Otherwise, assign a static IP and see if that works. If not, you need to check the cables.. or else reinstall your network adapter (through device manager). It doesn't hurt to power down the machine once more and leave it off a bit either... then try again.Originally posted by: GoodToGo

Well the other comps on the same router work so I guess that's not the problem. As for the drivers, they are the ones installed with WINXP and the internet was working initially but I had to unplug the cable. On replugging it, the internet refused to work again.

make sure DHCP is enabled. Make sure the ethernet cable is not fux0r, make sure you have blinking lights on both your nic and router port where you plug the cable in.
run > cmd >
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns

Did you read the manual for the router?
Because that's your path to salvation. Or you can search around the manufacture's website, I'm sure they offer pdf manuals or supports of some sort.Originally posted by: GoodToGo
Dunno where the manual is, must be buried under a 100 boxes, why?Originally posted by: cr4zymofo
