ARRG Scandisk and Defrag

I have a strange problem with Scandisk and Defrag in Windows 98SE.

I have a 30Gb drive with just over 17Gb filled, and whenever I try to scan or defrag it, it tells me there is not enough memory to continue with this operation, and to close some programs and free up all memory, and try again.

It does this straight after a boot, in safe mode, when I close down all programs except the necessary (from alt ctrl del menu) etc...

I have a second HDD, with just win98 installed and drivers, so if I get trouble with my main drive, I can run off this auxillary HDD until I fix things. Win98 on my 30Gb drive will scan and defrag this second (13Gb) drive.

If I switch drives and boot from my second, with 30Gb in as slave, the Win on the 13Gb will scandisk the 13Gb but still NOT the 30Gb - same error.

I have tried topping up windows, and during the top up, it has given me a similar error (cannot check drive for errors due to inadequate memory, please check himem.sys is in your config.sys). I check this, and it's fine.
Windows still lets me top up, despite the error, but does not fix the problem.

Any ideas - anyone?

cheers

I have a similar problem on a computer that I built for a friend, the difference if that it is one partition that gives the same error message every time I try to scandisk or defrag it.

To get around the problem I scandisk on DOS and use VOPT99 or VOPTME for the defrag, it is very fast.

cheers,

I will do a search on the defragging program you mentioned.

I will also look up TechNet at work tomorrow, maybe has some answers there.

I just did a search on the Microsoft Knowledge Database, and it told me that this usually happens wif your drive is larger than 8Gb and the cluster size is less than 8Kb, and is possible if you used a thrid party disk tool on your drive.

Their only solution was to contact the vendeur to get an update for the software.

However, I know for a FACT that I used Fdisk and format as per the Win98 boot disk.

And I have previously both scanned and defragged the drive about two or three months back, and have not formatted since.

Anyone know if I can find out or change my cluster size??

BTW: It doesn't really matter, I just today installed Microsoft Whistler (Build 2296), and the scanner and dfregger doesn't whinge 🙂
