does seem a bit fishy with all the other stuff about altered passport, but if he was really going to commit a terrorist attack with it, seems pretty damn stupid to fly with it from Saudi Arabia to the US. Why not just buy one when he got here if he was just going to use it as a bomb.

Read more carefully. It was not 'altered', it was missing a page. It could have fallen out, or been ripped out by careless border agents at any number of airports.

It makes NO sense to bring a pressure cooker here to commit a crime. So much easier to buy one cash and have there be no paper trailer. Flying one in from around the world? Holy crap, that's a stretch.

you have a passport fully intact, then the same passport has a page missing. what do you call that?

Damaged.

It's all the games that the news/police plays to slant the story. If they stated the passport was 'damaged', people would be curious.

Altered suggests that something was intentionally done (by the owner), and makes it look like he did something that he should not have.
 
Yeah...if somebody dings your car, you don't say they 'altered' it. They damaged it. 'Altered' is just 'modified,' but often with connotations that are a little more nefarious.
 
Yeah, he wasn't arrested for having a pressure cooker. He was arrested for the altered passport and for lying about the pressure cooker.

This guy is a fucking idiot, and probably is a terrorist. My guess is that he tore out the page in the passport that showed his trip to Pakistan.

What if the page that was missing had information about him going to Russia/Chenchya, Pakistan, or Yemen?

Yes, it's missing a page.
And yes, it also could have purposely been ripped out by himself if he visited any of those countries.
You can't automatically assume that because a page is ripped out or missing that it's not possible for it to have been purposely altered.

It would be much easier to claim that passport was lost/stolen and get a new one.

Depends.
Claiming a passport as lost or stolen costs money(lets say $100 or so, if not more) and could have a processing time of 6 weeks or longer.

On the other hand, tearing out a page takes only seconds and doesn't cost any money.

I've been through so many border crossings that I've run through several passports (all the pages were filled border stamps etc.).

I've never seen any border agent rip any passport page.
