Hey guys, first post here, looking for some input.

I'm putting together a gamer / web browsing / htpc rig. I'm not going to be running crossfire or anything anytime soon, and I'm super extreme about much of anything... just wanted to build an up to date box that can handle pretty much anything. I would love a little input on CPU/mobo/ram, because thats what I know the least about (and if anyone has seen a good newegg combo, let me know

). Anyway, here are the prelim questions.

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Mainly gaming and web browsing… with a little bit of HTPC flair
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
Trying to stick around 1000… happy with less, or more… bang for the buck is my major concern
3) Where do you live?
Oklahoma.
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
CPU, RAM, PSU, Case, Video Card, Motherboard, HDD, Possibly sound card
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Not reusing parts
6) Will you be overclocking?
Doubtful
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
Got a 17 inch 1280 now, but when doing the HTPC duty, going to be going HDMI to a 1080p 40inch Samsung
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Tomorrowish
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
A major concern for the motherboard (which I certainly know the least about) is the on board sound. When doing HTPC duty, I’m not looking to push DTSMA, True Digital, and all the other crazy Blu-ray audio formats. Hoping to find onboard sound that can pass DTS and DD5.1 through optical or digital coax. It doesn’t have to be the highest caliber of sound on the planet… but if there is no decent onboard sound, I’d like to remix where money from the budget comes from, and get a soundcard to get the job done
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
Yes - Windows 7 64 bit Professional.

And after following the forums for awhile, and reading some reviews, this is a basic build I cooked up, open to all suggestions though

I'm open to an Intel build but I'm looking for a specific CPU/motherboard/RAM combination that is known to be happily compatible. Anyone have any experience?

Our last build had RAM that never was really happy working with the motherboard.

Thanks in advance,
Patrick

Alternatively:

CPU: i5 750, 199.99
Motherboard: Gigabyte P55A-UD4P, $184.99

Everything else the same as your setup. All RAM that says "Designed for Intel P55" should work on most, if not all, P55 boards.

Either way, AMD 955 and Core i5 750 are both great CPUs for a solid build.

i would just get the UD3. you don't need the dual LAN controllers or the 8x secondary PCIe that the UD4P offers and with this combo upgrading to i5 will only cost $34 more than the Phenom II system:

The i5 at stock speeds is just plain faster than the Phenom II 965, let alone the 955. The extra $34 is well spent for both speed and energy consumption/heat. The motherboard includes coax and TOSLINK audio output as well as USB 3.0 and SATA III when it comes time for SSD.

There is also no reason to get lower-timing memory. just get nice set of XMS3 and stay closer to your budget.
