Arod wins MVP

Argo

Lifer
Heh, it's on ESPN. Don't know what to think about this. Guess he deserved it if you take his postseason performance away (writers voted before the postseason started)

he had the MOST meangingless RBI's of any player in the league last year.....if you were already up by 5 runs in the 8th...he's a gauranteed HR or base clearing double. Last guy you want up in a clutch situation. As ortiz said, no one's ever won a gold glove because of their defense....so how could he lose it becuase he doesn't play the field. Having said that, I'm betting Manny sucked up some votes too

You probably mean offense, but in either case I completely disagree. Gold glove is strictly a defensive award. MVP is not a gold "bat" award so to speak, it's an all around award for how valuable you are to your team..which includes both offense and defense.

Raffy palmeiro once one a gold glove despite the fact he only started 25 games at 1b

You'd be betting wrong. There were 28 voters:

player
Alex Rodriguez, Yankees 16 11 1 331
David Ortiz, Red Sox 11 17 0 307
Vladimir Guerrero, Angels 1 0 9 196
Manny Ramirez, Red Sox 0 0 9 156

A-rod and Ortiz got every 1st place vote except one and every 2nd place vote. Ramirez got nothing better than a 3rd and hence did nothing to change the voting in any way. He didn't take votes away from Ortiz. Ortiz lost because he's a fatass who can't play a position and needs to nap in the dugout while the real players are out in the field. He might have had a chance if the award wad for "most valuable hitter" rather than "most valuable PLAYER"

A rod won Most Valuable Player? I suppose a rod is part of the foul pole, but come on. Is there that many worthless people out there?

There was a great SI article on this a few months back. The author was arguing for ARod - and his main point wasn't defense. It was that ARod had the same number of clutch hits that Ortiz did, plus stole 20+ bases. He also bats #2.

I hate the Yanks & ARod as much as the next guy, but ARod deserved to win.

I'm not shocked, considering the writers who do the voting. A DH will never win an MVP, so why have the position at all?

Wacky logic. A reliever (likely) won't win the Cy Young, so why have the position at all?

I'm the next guy. 😀 I love the Yankees.

I'm the next guy, I dislike the Yanks and Arod. 😛

You weren't the 'next' guy in the thread. 😉

Yes, but I am the next guy following you.

edit - BAH! isasir screwed that one up

Ha! I nef faster than you!

i think its deserved. but im biased, as im not the biggest fan of the designated hitter role. if ortiz did get out there and play first for a good chunk of the season, id say give it to him. but since he didnt, he got the award that best reflects the role of the most outstanding al dh: the silver slugger.

You missed the whole Eric Gagne thing in 2003, didn't you?

hehehe, being an NL guy myself, i'd say, exactly, why HAVE the position at all? the DH is a stupid position. it takes away too much from small ball and puts the emphasis all on power.

nope, give me small ball NL any day of the week.
