Army extends reservists? Iraq tours

1-year stay in Iraq, nearby nations for troops already in place

By Vernon Loeb and Steve Vogel
THE WASHINGTON POST

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 ? With U.S. forces stretched thin in Iraq and the Bush administration still searching for additional international peacekeepers, the Army has ordered thousands of National Guard and Army Reserve forces in Iraq to extend their tours in the country to a year, months longer than many of the troops had anticipated, Army officials said yesterday.

I really feel for reservists and their families . . . IMHO, we never intended to use reserves and certainly not National Guard troops in this manner.

Reserve mission has changed since the fall of the wall and the subsequent "peace dividend". Active forces were drawn down with definitive plans for the reserves to fill the gaps. Your point about the Guard is probably right on and with the hurricane season upon us any major 'cane making landfall is quickly going to expose another flaw in this plan. I think any govenor besides the Pres's brother in FL would be screaming at the top of his lungs for his Guardsman to be at home.

Edit: I also feel for those in the Guard and Reserve who have had to deploy. Yes, they knew it when they signed up but it is still traumatic being ripped out of your normal life. Those of us on active, especially those of us who deploy as a way of life, have it much easier. We plan for it, our lives revolve around it and it is much easier on us than the Guard/Reserve.
