Army 'birther' who refused deployment convicted

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) - An Army doctor who disobeyed orders to deploy to Afghanistan because he questioned President Barack Obama's eligibility to be commander in chief told a jury Wednesday he was wrong to do so and would now deploy if he could.

Lt. Col. Terrence Lakin of Greeley, Colo. was speaking during a court martial hearing Wednesday at Fort Meade.

On Wednesday, however, Lakin reversed course, saying he would now deploy even with his question unanswered. Puckett asked him why.

"That's my duty. It's what I've trained for. I'm in the Army," he replied.

"Are we done disobeying orders, Lt. Col. Lakin?" his attorney asked him.

"Yes," Lakin replied.

So... like a typical loudmouth.... backs down when pressed hard...

Excuse me, he already done crime, why should we let him crawfish out with a last minute conversion? Its sets the wrong example for fellow nutcases.

He was told to deploy years ago and did not. And now we tell him he gets his cake and gets to eat in too in Uncle Sammy's voluntarily army?

I don't agree with the guy, but I think they should give him a break. Human beings make mistakes sometimes. He probably just got caught up in all the BS and wasn't thinking clearly.

he refused deployment, he didn't threaten anyone

Allowing soldiers to disobey orders threatens far more than a single gunman with a pistol.

A gunman might kill a few people. Big deal -- we lose nearly 40,000 a year to just car accidents.
OTOH, soldiers acting as individuals can lose you a country.

He missed movement. He should be punished like any other soldier missing movement. Ie: loss of rank, etc.

Me thinks that doctor watched one too many episodes of M*A*S*H*. He would'a fit right in with Klinger as his sidekick nurse.

I can't imagine the military being too tolerant of a soldier refusing to follow orders no matter how much he\she apologizes or explains.

BTW what kind of drugs was this guy using to able to justify doing something this stupid to himself?

Yea he is just thinking, damm I was here for 17years and will lose all my benefits if I am kicked out.

He should get a dishonorable discharge at the least. Anything less he can still get benefits, apply for Fed Gov jobs, etc…

I'm sorry but that is just daft, what about the Abu Ghraib personel? Just a mistake because they were caught up in the BS and were not thinking clearly?

You follow orders if they are not illegal, not respecting BOTH of those is insubordination and should be punished severely, i'd say ten years is good enough for the good doctor that was eager to get payed but to afraid to get deployed in a combat zone.

Give him the boot and stick him with the bill for his medical training, ~250K sounds about right.

Karma works in mysterious ways. Too bad for his family though, especially his kids.

After another opinion filled thread about what the real deciders should do, the military court martial has deliberated and the verdict is in.

As Larkin gets dismissed from the army, presumably dishonorably, and goes to jail, straight to the brig for six months.

The two jokers in the deck is that one overall superior officer can modify the sentence and Larkin has some limited appeal rights.

A bit late on that post, Common Courtesy posted that quite a while ago.

But you never did read before posting so it's not surprising at all.

In this case you are correct, I read some posts after the Common Courtesy one that did not address the actual verdict, but I have no problem admitting Common Courtesy posted first.
