Armored Core - is it basically Mech Warrior?

I had the hankering to play something Mechwarrior-like since there hasn't been anything new in forever from the franchise, so I picked up Chrome Hounds. It's fun, but it feels like something is missing from it (lasers maybe?).

I noticed Armored Core on the shelf, whatever the latest one is... I'm wondering if this is similar in nature to Chrome Hounds/Mechwarrior as well, or is it something completely different?

Completely different. If Mechwarrior is the Counter-Strike of the mech game world, Armored Core is the Unreal Tournament or Quake. In other words, it's a lot faster and 'spammy.'

The Armored Core series borrows about as much from MechWarrior as it does from Virtual On...it's faster-paced like the latter and not as involved as the former, as a rule, but it does borrow trappings like customization and so on. I'd look for a demo, though (I think Armored Core For Answer has one), to be sure it's right for you.

I wish someone would remake the MechWarrior franchise using modern technology. I loved those games . . . While they're at it, speaking of mech games, how about a SHOGO 2?

Armored Core is way different. it is a lot faster paced, but I wouldn't say it is less involved. If anything, I would say it is more involved, with hundreds of meters, statistics, and other things to keep in mind while customizing your machine.

Download the AC demo and try it. These are fast, nimble mechs not the slow but deadly Mechwarriors.

Also, used seller prices at Amazon are way below store prices even for sealed copies.
