Police face Mexican military, smugglers
Armed standoff along U.S. border
By Sara A. Carter and Kenneth Todd Ruiz, Staff Writers

Mexican soldiers and civilian smugglers had an armed standoff with nearly 30 U.S. law enforcement officials on the Rio Grande in Texas on Monday afternoon, according to Texas police and the FBI.

Mexican military Humvees were towing what appeared to be thousands of pounds of marijuana across the border into the United States, said Chief Deputy Mike Doyal, of the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Department.

Mexican Army troops had several mounted machine guns on the ground more than 200 yards inside the U.S. border -- near Neely's Crossing, about 50 miles east of El Paso -- when Border Patrol agents called for backup. Hudspeth County deputies and Texas Highway patrol officers arrived shortly afterward, Doyal said.

"It's been so bred into everyone not to start an international incident with Mexico that it's been going on for years," Doyal said. "When you're up against mounted machine guns, what can you do? Who wants to pull the trigger first? Certainly not us."

An FBI spokeswoman confirmed the incident happened at 2:15 p.m. Pacific Time.

"Bad guys in three vehicles ended up on the border," said Andrea Simmons, a spokeswoman with the FBI's El Paso office. "People with Humvees, who appeared to be with the Mexican Army, were involved with the three vehicles in getting them back across."

Simmons said the FBI was not involved and referred inquiries to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE did not return calls seeking comment.

Doyal said deputies captured one vehicle in the incident, a Cadillac Escalade reportedly stolen from El Paso, and found 1,477 pounds of marijuana inside. The Mexican soldiers set fire to one of the Humvees stuck in the river, he said.

Doyal's deputies faced a similar incident on Nov. 17, when agents from the Fort Hancock border patrol station in Texas called the sheriff's department for backup after confronting more than six fully armed men dressed in Mexican military uniforms. The men -- who were carrying machine guns and driving military vehicles -- were trying to bring more than three tons of marijuana across the Rio Grande, Doyal said.

Doyal said such incidents are common at Neely's Crossing, which is near Fort Hancock, Texas, and across from the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

"It happens quite often here," he said.

Deputies and border patrol agents are not equipped for combat, he added.

"Our government has to do something," he said. "It's not the immigrants coming over for jobs we're worried about. It's the smugglers, Mexican military and the national threat to our borders that we're worried about."

Citing a Jan. 15 story in the Daily Bulletin, Reps. David Dreier, R-Glendora, and Duncan Hunter, R-San Diego, last week asked the House Judiciary Committee, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, the House Homeland Security Committee and the House International Relations Committee to investigate the incursions. The story focused on a Department of Homeland Security document reporting 216 incursions by Mexican soldiers during the past 10 years and a map with the seal of the president's Office of National Drug Control Policy, both of which were given to the newspaper.

Requests by Dreier, chairman of the House Rules Committee, and Hunter were made in jointly signed letters.

On Wednesday, Chertoff played down the reports of border incursions by the Mexican military. He suggested many of the incursions could have been mistakes, blaming bad navigation by military personnel or attributing the incursions to criminals dressed in military garb.

Mexican officials last week denied any incursions made by their military.

But border agents interviewed over the past year have discussed confrontations those they believe to be Mexican military personnel.

"We're sitting ducks," said a border agent speaking on condition of anonymity. "The government has our hands tied."

Yup, Mexico has been invading our territory for quite a while. We can do a lot more to protect our citizens from the Mexican military, police and of course the illegals who cross here every day. We need to set up a wall and then have high tech monitoring devices. Increase in manpower will help.

We need to get tough with these people. How long can we allow the invasion of this country?

Looks like the vigilante group hasn't been so successful. But how can they when they face the Mexican military which is aiding the illegals to come here?

We need new leadership. Leadership that will stand for America.

So "lefties" are not concerned about our invasion? About our border being so porous?

Apparently, none of the politicians in Washington really want to touch this subject. Democrats AND Republicans.

When people illegally come into your country on a daily basis with the help from their military, that is called an invasion.

I don't listen to Hannity or Rush, but you probably do since you know thats the word they use.

We'd better recall the troops from Iraq and post them on the border. Maybe Congress can declare war, it is an invasion after all, that sounds serious.

They are invading Texas ... from Texas they are moving on New York, Oklahoma, New Jersey, Florida, Virginia etc.

Therefore, they're invading this whole country.

You're argument is extremely weak because many illegals enter Arizona, New Mexico and California from the border, so we might as well give back those states to Mexico as well.

Just to make you happy, lets give them Utah, Nevada and parts of the midwest.

Sounds like the border patrol needs anti-armor rockets and light machine guns as part of their standard kit, or at least on call.

With parts of the Mexican army hiring itself out to the drug lords we also need new rules of engagement instead of leaving our guys unable to act.

Either that or to decriminalize marihauana so the price falls far enough to put the drug lords out of business.

Hell raildog, on this even I agree with you...I wouldn't volunteer a day to serve in Iraq, but would eagerly sign up to protect the US - Mexican border where the REAL threat is...even if the threat was similar.

We have to stop this situation now. They are laughing at us in a way that even Saddam ever did...giggling at us and our inability to stop them on a nightly basis.

We don't need high tech monitoring devices or the next Berlin Wall...we need close air controllers moving with the ground patrols, and we need to re-activate the A-10 fleet, load them up with depeleted uranium slugs, and run combat patrols EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. We should have standing orbiting patrols at 10,000 over the boarder every 100 miles, with closer spacing over known hotspots.

You want to see those HumVee driving Mexicans laugh when two A-10s come in hot?

I think a few runs like THAT and border crossings will fall off quickly...

Chicken little?

Wow.

Also, Mexico's military is paid by US policies?

I don't know. Maybe I must be out of it. Maybe we should really open the borders and eliminate our borders and change our name to North Mexico or something like that.

And lets put up supermarkets along the desert so the tired Mexicans can get a snack or two while they're illegally crossing into America.

Yep, America is evil and lets change our lifestyle to make our neighbors happy.

200 years of freedom and democracy doesn't mean a thing. George Washington? Who? Thomas Jefferson? What?

We have an airforce base and an army base in Texas. Just call in air support. Their use to be an Air Cav Troop at Ft Bliss, TX. What better way to train than to repel border excrusions. This is what the Mexicans do along their southern border.

Can you imagine the uproar from the left in this country if we decimated a few dozen Mexican troops illegally within our borders transporting drugs?

oh this is too funny

OK so we have an "invasion" of Mexican military. More likely its a "regional conflict" and not an invasion. But feel free to use your rhetoric

BUT

allow us to poke fun at your rhetoric just as you poke fun at those that are crying out loud about the loss of civil liberties and american rights because of the spying program. And then the eventual Nazi germany comparisons come out along with the Gestapo and MiB rhetoric.

please, don't use a double standard.

you can have your "invasion," as long as you let others have thier "nazi comparisons," and "gestapo tactics."

It just goes to show how stupid the rhetoric/arguments can be from both sides.

Don't blame this on the left. Shrub allows this to continue as much as the left does. They could stop it oif they wanted to without blowing anybody up, all they have to do is enforce the law.
