What I consider to be the premier shooter on PC is free to play until October 27. If you've wanted to check it out, I highly recommend it.
Mods that I think you should try:
King of the Hill - http://armakoth.com/ - downloads automatically when you join a KofH server. 3-way team-based sector control. Fairly noob friendly.
Battle Royale - http://battleroyalegames.com/ - Everyone drops onto an island without gear and it is up to you to survive until the end. You die once and you're booted. Very tense gameplay.
Epoch - http://epochmod.com/ - Uses a standalone launcher but might not be in open alpha yet. I haven't played in a couple weeks. Very early in development. No zombies, unlike Arma 2 Epoch. Focuses on base building and hostile AI, drones and the occasional mutant and cultist.
Breaking Point - http://www.thezombieinfection.com/ - The best zombie mod currently for Arma 3. Tons upon tons of custom weapons and ballistics. Customized, high quality sounds and music. Uses a standalone launcher.
