I bought a USB nic for my linux server as that motherboard will not accept onboard network adapters (wont boot) and due to the horrid setup downstairs I just don't feel like fighting with that so I said screw it. It would not work. At one point I could set an IP then ping out but then that stopped working. DHCP did not work from the start.

Decided to try it on my windows box so I can rule out the server/OS. I plug it in, shows up as a new LAN connection, I plug in live ethernet cable.. BSOD.

Error:

Error code 000000b8, parameter1 00000000, parameter2 00000000, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 00000000.

(not that this will help someone diagnose the problem but w/e :p)

So is the nic fubared, or could there be something I can do about this? I did not pay a lot for it but still a piss off that it's not working.

edit: on tigerdirect it actually says Sabrient as the brand, though it looks almost the same as mine which says Arkview. (Same design).

USB Gigabit NIC? Now if that isn't marketing BS if I've ever heard it. USB bus only operates at 480 Mbps in an essentially half-duplex mode.

Sorry, I just thought it was funny.

Did you install the supplied drivers before connecting the device?

You could try contacting Sabrent for support / newer drivers, and failing that, as a last resort, try some third-party drivers e.g. some Trendnet ones (based on the assumption that the devices may be built using the same underlying hardware even though the enclosure and branding, etc., are different).

Yes I found that funny as well, but it was the same price as the 100mb one so figured why not. But I don't expect to get gigabit speed out of it.

And yes I plugged the device in, installed the drivers, then when I plugged the ethernet cord it BSODed.

In Linux I was unable to get it to ping the gateway, so I'm thinking it's just defective. Nothing on Google at all about this issue either. I'll try contacting them and see what they say.

There's nothing funny about being able to go 2-3x faster than "fast" Ethernet. Oh wait..

Weird it works in win2k... so this breaks my theory that its defective. So guess it's not as easy as just buying another. Given Linux picked it up I should not need to install drivers right? Or would I still need to? The instructions are chinese to me, I don't even know where to start. It looks like this may require to recompile the kernel, something far beyond my knowledge of Linux.
