It's become pretty apparent that this is the case in most states but AZ it is painfully obvious. Is the outrage of these various vocal sheriffs of AZ political grandstanding, or the more reasonable approach - they are at their wits end and can no longer standby helpless to protect and serve their citizens.

“What’s very troubling is the fact that at a time when we in law enforcement and our state need help from the federal government, instead of sending help they put up billboard-size signs warning our citizens to stay out of the desert in my county because of dangerous drug and human smuggling and weapons and bandits and all these other things and then, behind that, they drag us into court with the ACLU,” Babeu said.

“If the president would do his job and secure the border; send 3,000 armed soldiers to the Arizona border and stop the illegal immigration and the drug smuggling and the violence, we wouldn’t even be in this position and where we’re forced to take matters into our own hands,” Babeu said.
Dever said the federal government’s failure to secure the border and its current thwarting of Arizona’s effort to control illegal immigration within its borders has implications for the entire country.

Other than being stuck in 2007, I'm sorry they are so frustrated.

I'd tend to think more grandstanding - hard to think of a more politicized environment than yer local sheriff's dept.

I agree with him. the goverment should be doing more to secure the boarder.

the sign is infuriating. its a band aid on a real danger that needs to be addressed.

but political power is more important then doing the right thing.

Sure we could post an armed man every 50 yards, they'll just tunnel under or use a fucking submarine.

But hey, at least someone will get rich supporting such a fools errand. You cannot stop drug smuggling no matter how many troops or how much money you throw at the problem.

I'm willing to wager that killing them on the way in would cut down on it alot. Currently, they get something akin to "Now Jose, you need to stop doing that!" and sent back.

Yes, they'll use submarines in the Arizona desert. This isn't a war-on-drugs thread.

RABBLE! + RABBLE! = more votes

If the illustrious sheriff were really concerned about public safety he'd be out in the desert chasing down drug runners and human smugglers instead of expending resources rounding up jaywalking landscapers with insufficient paperwork.

Alright, you take 4 of your friends to some basic combat training and then go take on the drug cartels in the middle of the fucking desert. With any luck you'll never post here again.

I'd wager throwing employers in jail would cut down on a lot of the illegal immigration as well.

uh i think we should start sending 2nd offenders to labor camps. you want to come to the US to do cheap farm labor? Here, we'll send you to build a fucking Great Wall between the US and Mexico. Come here again? Arite, we'll use you to build the autoturrets!

And employers who knowingly hire need to be slapped with a $250,000 fine. Yeah, we can use that money.

Its not the employers job to enforce immigration law no more than it is the states job. It is the job of the federal government.

If someone comes in for a job it is reasonable to assume that they can legally work.

Let me put it another way. If you go to a night club and someone uses a fake ID to enter (a club being 21) and you hook up with them you go to jail. It is not your fault that person used a fake ID. Its not the clubs fault that they used a fake ID. It is the person who used the fake IDs fault.

I love how people always want to blame someone else for the actions of illegal aliens.

Who said anything about enforcing immigration law? The company has a duty to make sure who they are hiring is legally allowed to work hence the I-9 form.

Could be a combo of grandstanding and frustration.
Are the local sherrifs elected or hired to their positions?

Or maybe I can inhale a couple dozen donuts then go round up a bunch of brown-skinned people, while the sheriff actually goes out and does something related to his job.

It isn't the employer's fault if the illegal immigrant uses a fake ID. It IS the employer's fault when he knowingly hires an illegal and pays that person cash under the table. This is the case in the vast majority of situations where an illegal is hired.

No you love making excuses for those who exploit the law by hiring illegals to make a shitload of money for themselves.

Dunno it was only mentioned multiple times in the OP. This is about whatever you guys want it to be, it changes depending on the day.

One day the major concern is anchor babies destroying America, next day it's welfare/socialism, next day it's criminals and rapists, the next day it's the drugs harming the children.

You guys base your hype on whatever will drive the most irrational fear into your intended audience.

Of course none of it was a problem when Bush was in control for 8 years.

It's an amazing thing.

politicians all want to get elected or re-elected. When that becomes their #1 priority (and everything else is a distant second) it's no surprising that they have to cater to certain demographics to ensure their political continuation. I hate to say it but Hispanic voters will become a major voting block in this country (if they not already are) due to their immigration and birth rates. No politicians, due to their bottom feeding nature, would risk doing anything drastic about the illegals in the U.S. if they wanted to get elected at any serious office level. It's a sad sad situation really.

If the good Sheriff had the backing of the Federal government he would probably do just that.

As it stands ANY action taken against an illegal out in the sand is going to result in Americans going to jail and Jose getting a big fat check and a pat on the back.

Now how fucked up is that?
