I'll be visiting some family in El Paso in late October and plan to go north from there up to Petrified Forrest NP and then take as much of old Rt 66 back to San Diego from there.
I've taken part of Rt 66 before (from Seligman to Kingman) and eaten at Delgadillo's Sno-Cap and I'm curious what other interesting things might be out there to see and experience from those that might have been that way before.
Below is the route I'm taking. Feel free to make suggestions to changes or anything.

Since you will be coming through Flagstaff, I highly recommend you take a detour north on 89 and see the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Just did this myself on a 3600 mile road trip.. its breathtaking.

My trip was from Florida to San Diego.. I also made a detour from Kingman, AZ up to Vegas.. wish I had more time or I would have checked out Lake Mead also.

Oh yeah, I love driving through New Mexico, especially the Aztec area. The continental divide is one of the best views around. Not so sure about Rt 66. We've been on it a few times, but nothing much to say about it.

olden 66 is 40 now

pertified forest/painted desert are
not really a destination, more like places to breeze through. Lots of northwestern New Mexico is at least as pretty, like Hwy 96/Hwy 580.

When you hit Flagstaff turn for a side trip either north to Grand Canyon or south to Slide Rock & Sedona & Cottonwood. Cowboy dinner & show at Blazin' M Ranch in Cottonwood, horseback ride at Dead Horse Ranch Cottonwood. We enjoyed that place recently.

All in all you're looking at a whole lotta desert driving. Better to fly & rent a car. Say fly SAN to El Paso, then fly to Phoenix & rent a car, then go see stuff & fly or drive home.

I won't have enough time for a horseback ride and I've seen the Grand Canyon and Meteor Crater on other trips through Az. Looking for something different, are Sunset Crater and Wupatki Ruins worth seeing?

Edit: Maybe I should mention I only have about 2.5 days to travel. I originally wanted to see Canyon de Chelly but I think it might be too far out of the way.

A guy I know and myself drove from L.A. to Orlando in 2.5 days. It had been a dream of mine to drive cross country, but this was a totally miserable experience. We only stopped for fuel/food and two nights to sleep.
