When the Ariel Atom came out it was semi-reasonable to purchase due to its introductory pricing. After all the acclaim it received the price skyrocketed.

I just received an e-mail showcasing the new Nomad. The price? $80,000+ for a "well-equipped" model. That's Z06 territory. That's insanity:

I've been looking casually at Atoms and was a bit shocked by the price, what was their intro price?

IIRC it was roughly $60k USD before Top Gear did their bit on it. After that it shot up to $90k+.

At $60k it's a SCREAMING deal for the performance it offers - being more capable than almost every supercar on the market under $250k.

I don't think anyone was shocked at the sticker for the Atom 500. However $90k for a relatively simple car with a supercharged civic motor pulls it out of the hands of your average middle-class Joe and into wealthy-only territory. It's not just that the price inflated that caused this shift, but the difficulty in aquiring one... states like CA put strict limits on registering them, http://www.andysatom.com/legal.html

That said, I really, really want one 🙂

EDIT: $50k http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/20/entry-level-ariel-atom-3-priced-from-49-980/

I wonder where all of the cost comes from on this car, are you sitting in a carbon fiber tub or something?
