My friend thinks that torrents are completely safe as it is untraceable (no centralized server) however, i thought that pretty much everything is tracable....

I need some solid facts to back me up here, they are traceable, arent they? 🙂

You are anything but safe. Just load up azeures and check out the list of every client you're connected to complete with IP adresses.

When you connect to a torrent, you can view the IP of every other person connected. So no, they are not. In fact, they are less anon than most.

The Azureus guys just released or are about to release something that decentralizes the tracker. However, you need 3 main components to be able to download a torrent in general:
  1. .torrent file to find the tracker and file info
  1. tracker to find seeds and other peers
  1. seeder to provide the file chunks

Each of those chokepoints is a potential tracking point, especially if one of those were compromised by a "good guy" RIAA or MPAA.

absolutely traceable...as the matter of fact when I open "Torrent Detail" it shows every IP address I'm downloading/uploading from/to.
