Argument at work, Dolby Digital needs a video signal???

A friend at work was unable to get Dolby Digital working on his home theater receiver with a specific brand of DVD player. No matter what he did, the receiver was not treating the signal as a Dolby Digital signal. DTS worked with no trouble using the same setup, and even the same movies. To remedy the situation, he bought a new DVD player and everything works fine.

Another friend at work was saying the the reason it did not work, was because he was not running the video signal through the receiver. He said that to have a correct Dolby Digital signal, you need to also run the video through the receiver. I have never done this, and always plugged the digital audio cables directly into a receiver. and gotten Dolby Digital and DTS. Are you supposed to run the audio AND video signal through a receiver to get proper Dolby Digital sound?

no way. DD is a digital audio signal. No video is needed.

In fact it is best to NOT run your video through the receiver.

He probably had his DVD player setup wrong.

On my DVD player there are options for DD & DTS digital out. The options are off & bitstream (Panasonic's toslink basically). Separate options for each, mine came configured with DD set to bitstream & DTS off.

It took me an hour to find that setting, couldn't for the life of me figure out why DTS wouldn't work.

Yeah. On mine, you have to make sure the drive is closed and EMPTY for the players menu to be available.
