On the same computer too. This was an original one too when I built the computer. I've gone through 2 originals and 2 replacements. This one totally failed without any warning symptoms at all. I hate these drives!!!

Still on my first 2 after 2+ years.

Have an Antec SX-1030/40 case with fan in the hard drive bay though. I think cooling is the answer.

What could make my computer fail them?

My case is open so cooling not a problem. And it is well known that these drives are POS when it comes to reliability. The WD in my computer doesn't seem to mind. No problems with that one.

System temp is always 50 degrees.

My 60GXP is also still going strong. I have decent cooling though. Anyways I really hope mine dosnt decided to die on me.....that would not be good at all.

Just because your case is open doesn't mean you have good cooling.

Take this to cases and cooling and see what they say in there.

I had a 75GXP and a 60GXP die on me. No more IBM for me. Evar.

Oh yea and most IMB drives that fail don't do so because of "improper cooling". They're just teh suk.

Are you overclocking your fsb?
or have a crappy power supply?

Mine works like a dream and I even leave it on sometimes 24 hours in a row or more.

If cooling was a problem, shouldn't it be IBM's responsiblity to put a fan on its products and not mine?

I don't overclock at all and my PS is a 430W Enermax Whisper.

I think I'm lucky because I've got 2 IBM 75GXP 45GB drives in a RAID 0 for about a year and haven't had a problem.

Although they are cooled.

I've had a 10.1 GB 14GXP since late 1999. Apparently they don't make 'em like they use to.

Mine is a 60 gig 60gxp and I doubt if I would run any 7200rpm drive without some sort of hard drive cooler

Why would it require cooling while other manufactures dont require it?

Maybe this is a sign that you should stop using IBM hdds? You would think after 3 you would stop.

The ibm deskstar HD's are JUNK!! I went through 1, buddy went through 2, co-worker went through 1, etc.. Every person i knew that owned a Deskstar has had it fail. I had GREAT cooling (10 fans in a antec server case) - including a fan blowing directly on the HD, and it still failed after a year. Junk i tell you. WD for me now.

I have 3 SCSI drives, no special coolin made on HDs but do have couple case fans. They're IBM drives as well so go figure. the 120GX drive in my second box is kickin strong although my GF hardly ever turns the computer on. If you're stacking them tightly close together that might be your problem.

I stopped buying them. I have a Western Digital 80GB SE in my system now. I bought 2 IBMs when I built my PC because they were supposedly the best out there and the rest were replacements for faulty ones.
