So i went out and got a brand new 160gb drive today...(its gonna be 49-59 after rebate and coupon next week at Raples)....

Installed the damn thing. Crashes on windows install. Fine, plug the PCI Ata card in. Computer doesn't boot with hard drive power connected.

So, i'm thinking its a power problem. I throw my keyboard across the room. I look at my computer with a sly smile...so it wants to play....

I start up the computer with no HD power connected. As soon as it boots to the windows CD, i shove the molex connector into the HD, while yelling" take that you mofo!!!". Brilliant blue sparks follow.....system turns off. Sh!t, i say.

Replug everything. Pray to god, buddha, allah, etc.... It boots!!!! Windows installion looks ok. :)

Now, I'm wondering if those many stop/start cycles + forced poweroffs did anything bad to the hard drive?.....Anyway to to a fitness test other than surface scan?

You can download the disk-scanning utility from Maxtor's website, that's about as good a test as you can get.

I must say though, you are a dumbass.

It'll be fine..... (maybe) :p

I like SCSI hotswappable drives....those are always fun. I had a 36GB SCSI drive fail this morning one of my many arrays....it was nice just being able to plug a brand new one in and have the drive rebuild automatically without the server ever going down. ;)

NEVER plug anything in while your computer is powered on.

The general hardware forum might have more to say...

That was probably dumb, though. Is this the one from Staples w/ the pm to compusa? I wanna know how that worked out for people cuz I wanna score this drive.

Deal is for next week, no PM needed. Maxtor 160gb. Starts Sunday.

Oh, and the drive is dying now. I think. Windows no longer works...i hope i didn't kill my motherboard with it.
