Arghh! Dreaded DVI stuck in Power Save Mode on my new 2007 WFP

First off, Dell has wasted about 4 hours of my life on the phone, trying to deny that this problem exists, when there is evidence on their own support website to the contrary.

Stupidly, I thought they had finally licked the problem, but my brand new 2007WFP went into power save mode within 20 minutes of being turned on, and only random reboots will get it to come out of that mode, and only for short periods of time.

I know it's come up several times before, but my search didnt have any recent posts. Is there anything new involving a fix or way to handle this, or do I just have to continue to browbeat these idiots into replacing my POS defective monitor.

And before anyone teases me for getting a Dell: 1) I had no choice, it was an insurance replacement & 2) some other LCDs are having this DVI issue.

okay let me get this straight whe your display goes ito power save mode you can't get it to display anythin from there?

is the power save mode controlled by the display? probably in windows actually

I have a 2005FPW runnin DVI it turns off in like 20min when innactive and I have no problems coming back just move the mouse.

if your having problems with power save mode why don't you just do turn off the power save mode and just turn off your display when your away.

My vid card is a 7950 GT w/ dual DVI. If there is a cable connected to either port, the monitor flips from the green light, "no cable [attached]" mode, to the orange power saver mode. It is triggered by the connection of the cable, whether you connect it before or after you boot or before or after you power up the monitor. If the cabel is connected, monitor is in Power Save (sleep) mode. I cannot get to desktop.

Since I cannot get to desktop, I cant shut off PSM anymore. BUT, it isnt a windows issue. The PSM is controlled by the monitor. I dont think you can disable it. What's even better about the 2007 WFP is that the OSD menu doesnt work unless the monitor is in "ready" mode (a/k/a NOT PSM). So I cant even adjust the monitor properties even if you could disable it.

BTW, the reason that the monitor does this is because it thinks there is no signal coming from the vid card. I hooked the computer up to a Viewsonic at work and it worked fine.

I hate Dell.

Try this:

Right Click on the Desktop Background, Select Properties, Screen Saver, Monitor Power,
Power, Power Schemes ... Turn Off Monitor: Never

See if that helps

1. It's not the Windows PS mode, it's the monitors. As users on that thread I linked have stated, it doesnt matter what your Windows PS mode is.

2. I cant get to desktop. I only have the Dell monitor at home.

Did you connect the monitor using the VGA cable supplied and perform the fix as outlined on the website?

wow, thats crazy. I feel for you man.
I am a bit unclear as if you got the monitor as insurance replace or a whole Dell PC?

and yes that does seem to be a prob with the monitor
note in this site (below pics) he replays a conversation with the Dell rep in India:
http://www.atomicode.com/
finally, she says to reseat vidcard, but he leaves - no time to fool around
He should have quickly asked for level 2 help support transfer

Havent had this exact prob, so I will throw out a few random thoughts.

Dell must load the absolute correct working .inf file for the monitor shipped - it must show in NV control panel as 2007 specific model, not "default"
These OSx MAC guys had same prob with Dell LCD's, and it turned out they had to input the correct EDID number for the monitor. This is way advanced stuff, but it implies the LCD's does not transmit the correct code ID to Windows during wakeup when bios is out of loop.

You definitely want to check and see if the 2007 .inf file on the CD root is IN your XP system

Update 7/6/06: That didn't take long. I noticed the monitor had no color profile associated with it. I dug through the documentation and tried Dell's support site, but there was nothing there. I then browsed the CD and found a readme.txt file in the root. It said:

This 2007WFP.INF file is a digitally signed driver that supports the
following Dell monitor in Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP and x64 operating systems ...

So I followed the readme directions and ... nothing happened. XP was ignoring the INF file. I did see 2007WFP.icm in the same directory; ICM is Microsoft's extension for color profile specification files. I manually assigned this color profile to the display. Dell gets a few dings for lousy documentation, lousy web site support files, and a .INF file that doesn't do anything. Ahh. I feel better now ... A Google search on 2007WFP.icm turned up nothing. Well, it's online now .

Dual link DVI cables sometimes fixes LCD issues, even tho not necessary

You could try a DVI to VGA cable, use the vga inputs on monitor
http://tinyurl.com/yl9nom

In nvidia control panel it usually shows 2 monitors - you can shut off monitor 2

I vaguely recall a prob like this with a VS 922, and did a few things and seem to remember a cmos reset helped - but that was a VGA-DVI card. I think I used a vga PCI card to get it out of sleep.

Clearly, you need to try another card SINGLE DVI (or just vga), something/anything to set OSD and do the other things.

I dont think its a "defective" monitor, just monitor recognition problem from within XP.

Kind of glad to heal that Dells have these problems. I have this on some crappy brand monitor from black Friday. Sometimes it would just go to sleep. If I turn the monitor off and then on I see the picture for a second, but then it is off again.
Turning the monitor off for a few minutes usual does the trick, but it is mostly a luck thing. Mine does this without DVI.

Thank you for this post!

I just got a new 2007 WFP from Dell. If it happens again, I will try some of your fixes - partoicularly, I noticed that the Driver CD from Dell was nothing more than a manual. It had NO INF file on it that I saw on quickscan. I didn't look for an ICM file. I was very concerned with the fact that the one or two times I got it to work, it was listed as a DEFAULT monitor @ 1680x1050. I think I'm going to try to get an INF or ICM file on the new one, immediately on first boot (which I'm hoping works).

Thanks again. I'll update if I solve the problem.

There is a dvi reset utility that Dell has. They don't acknowledge it anymore but I got it from a Tier 3 support person about 3 years ago. I don't have a copy anymore. We had about 20-30 displays that would go to sleep. The Dell tech said it was related to the LCD firmware not being write protected and getting corrupt.

Didn't always fix things, but it worked often. If I can find it I will post it and get back with a URL

Good info. I will def get your file, ihope you find it..
It does back up what I guessed at above - the MAC guys having to manually input the EDID number of the monitor to the OSX. Its almost like the monitor circuit has enough juice at startup to broadcast "its me", but not from sleep. Or maybe it was shakey right from the start.
And not from all monitors of that type, just some.
I would call Dell level 2 and say email me the damn .inf or keep your damn monitor.

I havent been back home yet to test the replacement monitor, but tier 2 tech support previously told me to go into the monitor settings (back when it worked sometimes) and disable audio at bootup. I had no idea such a setting existed. It must be power related.

If so, I'm probably compounding the problem since my box is a Shuttle SFF w/ a 350W PSU. Not that I ever realized that the monitor drew power off the system. That just seems so illogical to me.

My specs in case someone wants to know:

Shuttle SN27P2 (socket AM2/PCIE)
Athlon X2 4200+ (65W low power version)
2x1GB Corsair XMS2 PC 6400
XFX GF 7950 GT (active cooling)
WD 250GB SATAII
Samsung 18X DVDRW

That's everything in the whole box running off that PSU. The Shuttle techs said I should have plenty of juice.
