Rented National Treasure, halfway in the movie, and the damn disc starts having read errors.

Take it out, there's not even bad scratching on the disc, but I had to search to a spot where it would start playing again without having the damn thing start locking up or stuttering through frames...

Probably missed ~15-20 minutes of the movie...

Is NetFlix or Blockbuster Online like this or are the discs usually in good condition???

 
I am with Netflix, and I kept the same 3 dvds all month. Two of them weren't even that good, I was just too lazy to go to the mailbox
 
The local Block Buster I used to live next to was terrible about keeping trashed DVDs in circulation. Almost every DVD that we rented from them took at least one spin through the Disk Doctor. I would say that out of every five movies we rented at any time, two of them had to be driven back the same night because of damage so severe, the Doc would be worthless.

We had much better luck with Netflix however. Maybe one out of every ten were damaged enough to glitch or skip. Those were easily taken care of with the DiskDr. I think only one, maybe two movies, actually had to be sent back because of damage. The only title I can actually remember was Freddy vs. Jason.
 
It's called a disc manufacturing error. You get them once in a while. Just report it to netflix and get a replacement sent out.
 
I had a problem with the Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning DVD from NetFlix(it had a lot of scratches though-in a circular pattern no less) playing, and I just reported it, as mentioned above, and NetFlix sent me a replacement DVD out the next day. Other than that one time I haven't had a problem with a disc playing (although some had quite a few light scratches/fingerprints/dirt/dust etc. on the playing surface).

as for me, i don't really buy "new releases" on ebay. the dvds i buy are usually older. that said, i have bought new releases from ebay in the past, and they have been legit (you usually can confirm by checking the UPC symbol against an online database like dvd profiler -- yes, i have been scammed too, but more often than not, i find good deals).

have you ever checked the hot deals forum? there are some 3 for $15 deals occasionally. awhile back, i got a slew of classic releases at j&r.

there are plenty of steals out there. you just need to find them.

alex: there are a lot of positive threads here about netflix and BB, but be careful and alert about the negative threads -- mailmen stealing dvds, dvds arriving late or being marked as returned (when not viewed by the original requester), etc. i did netflix awhile back, but i didn't rent enough to warrant the monthly fee. i don't rent/buy dvds that frequently so i'm not looking for anything at the moment.
 
This is one of the reasons I still prefer to rent VHS tapes. That and renting VHS is cheaper and I have a PS2 as my DVD player.

When DVDs go bad at certain spots, they really go bad. VHS go bad too, but you can still make out what's happening. Plus, I prefer the fast forward on the VCR more than the DVD player.
