So my Rebel XT (350D) started giving me the dreaded error 99 a few weeks back. It only happens if I press any of the buttons on the back. The camera still functioned but without those buttons, there is no adjusting any ISO options, picture preview, etc.

I decided to let a local repair place look at it and $100 later they told me that a screw had come loose inside and fried the main circuit board. I could send it back to Canon but in the end I'm not really sure it would be worth it. I'm getting it back today and I will check to see if it works like it did when I gave it to them. If it doesn't I think I will have a few words with them. :|

So my photography will be limping along for a while.

As for the good news, I've been working for my company for 5 years in February. For this milestone, they are going to give me a $350 "gift" which I will be using towards a new body. (was going to get a 100mm macro lens but :( )

I haven't looked into bodies in a while. Anyone have any recommendations? Only requirement is that it be a Canon since I have a Canon flash and lens. I'm not looking for anything too expensive but an upgrade might be in order! :)

*UPDATE*

My company let me get my gift early and I'm now the proud owner of a 40D! I decided to buy the body + kit lens since it was only $100 more. Seemed worth it to me.

I need to get out of work right now! It's sitting next to me eating away at my soul!!

Bummer about the 350D... It's always a bit frustrating when you are forced to upgrade due to failure, rather than by choice...

As for suggestions, I don't have any... I'll leave that up to the folks that are more heavily vested in the Canon platform. I'm sure you'll like what ever you end up with, even if it's going to take more money out of your pocket... Lotta good gear out there...

You can probably find a 30D or 40D in good condition on eBay for not much more than $350.
XTis and XSis are also in that range but aren't built nearly as well.

I just got my like-new D200 for $455 after 30% MS Live Cashback, so there must be similar Canon deals on eBay as well.

I think you meant 20d or 30d

I second that motion, I use both for shoots and dont see an upgrade any time soon

RIP 40Hands's 350D
