argh, WHY DOES MY P4 SUCK

Here's the story, i upgraded to the rig in my sig a little while ago and have had bad luck with it ever since. My p4 wont overclock well, can't get over 2.6 ghz without being unstable, i raise the vcore to 1.525, it's still not stable at 2.6, then i raise the vcore to 1.550, it finally seems a little bit stable. Then the comp starts crashing after a while, i take it back down to 2.57 ghz, and lower the vcore to default 1.5, everything starts overheating, super high temperatures (search for my recent threads for more info), then i take it back down to 2.4 Ghz, and everything else as default, it stills overheats like mad, i go in for inspection and find burning damage. I Can't do a damn thing about it, and i most likely can't return anything i purchased. Where did i go wrong? Everyone else gets amazing results with their P4s. Perhaps i went wrong when i started looking in to overclocking. I am against overclocking now, i know everyone else gets great results and everything, but i guess i just wasnt meant to do it. But i'm not as mad as i probably should be, because i saw this one coming, i knew the upgrade wasnt going to turn out well, but i still had my fingers crossed hoping for a miracle...

My guess is you didnt install the HSF correctly.

Mine too. jacktackle, you never answered my question as to whether you've done a reality check on your fan when it overheats. What fan are you using?

Could be the RAM too. If he's running 166mhz FSB, that stuff (Value RAM??? :Q ) might not go an inch further than spec.

The HSF is installed correctly, i recently took my case to a repair shop that a buddy of mine runs, they said everything should be fine. Using the deafult HSF, got 2 exhaust fans on the top of the back (i'm exhausted from repeating this so much lately) and 1 intake fan on the lower front.

Humor me. What kind of fan is it? How old, and have you looked to make sure it's still running at a suitable RPM when the temps start rising?

are you using the thermal pad or some thermal paste on your heatsink. Also pull and wiggle on your heatsinkn while its attached in the case. It should not move at all. If it does then you have a problem.

Gotta be a HS/Fan problem. Something is not installed right. It should not be running hot.

An Intel processor running hot? GOT to be a problem with the heatsink.

If you're using the little pad that comes on some heatsinks, did you take the plastic off?
If you're not using the little pad, are you using some kind of thermal compound?
Are you sure you mounted it correctly so that it's securely seated against the CPU? Sometimes it may seem fine while you've got it open and laying on it's side... stand it up normally and if it's not tight, the heatsink may "fall" away from the CPU and would no longer be making proper contact.

You insist that it's mounted properly, but P4's don't run hot when you overclock them 200 mhz. So whether you want to believe it or not, it IS a cooling problem, either with your heatsink or fan.
