argh... what the hell is going wrong with me? (a honest question)

It seems that lately my intelligence has been dropping or something (no joke!). For a while now, sometimes when I'm looking for something I sometimes can't find it unless I'm looking right at it. Yesterday I had a driving lesson and I assumed the car had power WINDOWS ;). Well I didn't see a button for it so I looked for a crank, but didn't find it till like 5 seconds later! Okay, it was the same color as the door but there's no excuse for stuff like that. The same thing happened when looking for the gear indicator on the dashboard (it was an automatic).

Now, I have a similar problem with hearing too. Sometimes when someone says something to me it's just gibberish and it doesn't click for up to 5 seconds. The funny thing is I don't notice this when I listen to two people talk to each other (most of the time, it will still happen occasionally if they're talking really fast). It happens mostly when someone talks to me.

Now my IQ tested 140 when I was 10 years old, but we all know how much relevance IQ tests have. I've always done well in math and the sciences, fairly well in history, psychology and the like, and about average in the languages. Now I'm in computer science and have done well - not great, but well for my first year. This is really bugging me though - I feel like I'm getting dumber with each passing day when crap like that happens. I mean, it just boggles the mind. Maybe my mind is already boggled, lol...

I'm not making any of this up, this is a honest inquiry - I'm sure one of you out there has an answer for me :)

edit: I'll add some info that I've posted since the thread was created:

I was born 4 weeks premature and I've had a physical deformity since birth which I believe is related to my mom smoking during pregnancy. I wonder what relevance this could have? Also, I was diagnosed with Gilbert's syndrome a while ago by a specialist. It's an almost harmless liver defect.

it is a possibility that you are become more stupid by the minute or you just may be suffering from poor nutrition and health. take some vitamins and get some rest. and don't say stupider:D

Yes, I did mean power windows. It could be the sleep, often I'm tired as hell even if I got 8 hours. Been like that for a long time.

Ah that's a bad habit. "More and more stupid" just sounds too damn long. Oh well, I changed it to "dumber", although maybe that's not correct either ;)

Not usually, unless we're talking about class ;)

I was diagnosed with Gilbert's syndrome a while ago (although I didn't do the follow-up bloodtest cause I was working days, that's what the specialist believed I had) which is just about harmless but apparently one of its effects is drowsiness...

good god man, don't scare me like that :(

Anyways, I was born about 4 weeks premature and I've had a physical deformity since birth (or at least as far back as I can remember) which I believe is related to my mom smoking during pregnancy, and that she was also only 17 when she gave birth. I wonder what relevance this could have?

This is coming from someone who watched friends go through a CS degree and get the same problems as you and who got his EE degree and ocassionally noticed the same type of problems. It is the stress, sleep deprivation and poor nutrition. If I were you I would try to consistently get a certain amount of sleep everyday. If possible, try to get up at approximately the same time every day and maybe even go to sleep at the same time every day, although I understand how hard that will be. Get a good multivitamin and take one each day and try to find some time to exercise some every day. Along with all that, try to relax and have some fun on the weekends, either by youself or with friends. I think all of this will help. Just my two cents.

Well some of that makes sense to me. It's worse when I'm stressed, and like I said before I don't seem to have problems listening to two people talk to each other, it's when they talk to me that my mind freezes up on me. I don't even eat breakfast or lunch often, so the nutrition thing could be it though. I got the exercise covered as I bike around a lot, I find exercise helps more with depression and boredom than anything else though :)

I still can't believe I said power steering before ;) It made sense to me in my head, I guess my fingers typed something different.

lol
Yeah, maybe I'll just blame it on my dad since I don't even know him and I probably inherited some crap from him ;)

Seriously, Broncho's post made some sense although if anyone else has insight I'd appreciate it :)

If it ever gets worse to the point of being really annoying I could always talk to a doctor... :(

I suggest you take an inventory of what you are eating, drinking, and how much you are sleeping.

Sounds like to me you might be just stressed out. High levels of anxiety can impair your ability to concetrate. Also, If you are stressed out, and have been for a while, you might be getting a little depressed (not feeling in control). Talk to your doctor about this. Also, you might want to just consult with a psychologist (not psychiatrist) and get an opinion there.

Chronic dehydration can have some of these effects on you too. Do you drink any water?

Otherwise, just try to eat healthy, drink plenty of water, exercise everyday, and get plenty of sleep.

Smoking crack could impair your decision making and your perception of reality. If you want to continue an education, I would suggest that you should stop smoking crack.

I don't even smoke weed anymore, I haven't at all this year. Hell it's been nearly a month since I even drank any alcohol, let alone got drunk. Wish I could blame it on that but I can't ;)

YamahaXS, I've always been someone of an anxious person, I'm not currently depressed but I used to be and was even somewhat suicidal. That came and went on its own, I guess. I have no idea what could be stressing me out but lately I had a mild outbreak of egzema on my skin. I haven't had that in, I don't know, 8 years at least! All of a sudden it just appeared like that. At least I didn't have an outbreak of acne, I've been trying to get rid of that and its almost gone, I still do have zits but they're the "invisible" kind, they're the same color as my skin. There's some redness here and there but my skin is great compared to 1-2 years ago. Of course, I may have my dermatologist to thank for that ;)
