Argh! This projector research is driving me insane!

First I was almost positive I wanted a AX200U... then I started having doubts about how reliable it would be... and the price. Then I started looking at the Mitsubishi HC1500 but have now basically decided against that due to the limited placement options. This morning I was looking at the Sanyo PLV-Z5 which looks to be a good overall projector. Not as bright as the others but it will allow me to place it behind me on a cabinet that is about 42.5" high and with the vertical adjustment will let me have a very good size image from about 11' away. I'll be sitting about 10' away from a ~92-100" image.

Any other serious contenders I should look at? I'd rather not spend the $1300 for the AX200U mainly because I don't know how reliable it will be. The Mitsu is the cheapest at about $845, but would basically require me to ceiling mount unless I wanted a <70" screen. The Z5 is about $1100 so it's positioned nicely between the 2 extremes.

The more I research the more I keep swaying back and forth. I've got a piece of notebook paper at home full of throw distances and screen sizes. I think I'm losing it a little bit.

In comparison the audio side of things is much easier... pretty much decided on the Onkyo 908 or 904 setups. By the time I save up for one of them after buying the projector they'll probably be an even better deal than they are now. 😉

Well besides attempting to Buy / Return, have you checked to see if there are any good HT / AV type stores in your area that might have a few options set up for you to see?

If you see a DLP projector in person and RBE really bothers you, then that would probably be enough to take the 1500 out of the running.

As for the Onkyo sets, as of right now it seems like through Amazon the 908 set is about the same price as most places are selling the 904 set (~$750).
The 908 set gets you a lot more than the 904 set, so I think it makes a lot more sense to do that if the price difference isn't too great.

I think the PLV-Z5 is going to win. Looks like Sanyo is a good company to buy from. 3 year warranty + they pay shipping both ways if you need repairs and they try to have it repaired in 3 days or less. I saw a lot of horror stories of Panasonic's support. Plus the bulbs are less expensive. I just can't find a real downside to the thing.

Doesn't look like Best Buy or Circuit City sell them, but Tigerdirect does... I've been in that store once and it depressed me so much I haven't gone back. 😉
I'd have to check on good AV stores in the Raleigh area... I'm sure they exist with all the million dollar+ homes around here. Even if there are some I'd probably end up buying from projectorpeople anyway. No tax + no shipping = win.
