argh, stupid expiry dates!

I recently purchased a bottle of Spontaneous Combustion hot sauce. It could've been my imagination, but all the sauces seemed a bit... dusty. Anyways, as i checked the bottle, the expiry date said 08/01/03. Does this mean January 8th, 2003? August 1st, 2003? Hot sauce doesn't go bad that fast, does it? or is it January 3rd, 2008? madness....
 
Im from Canada (eh?)... I just checked the fridge (hot sauce is important to me!) and most of the labels were something like 03/NOV/18 or something to that extent. stupid lack of standards *mutter*
 
The hot sauce isn't going to magically go bad by August unless you leave it out or something. Don't worry about it.
