I was looking at the contents of a CD-R onto which I had just recorded a second session using Windows' built-in IMAPI CD-Burning service. A standard file-copy dialog suddenly appeared as if I had accidentally dragged another file onto the disc. Windows was copying it to the temporary folder before burning. I cancelled the file-copy dialog and a strange folder appeared as a "File not currently on the disc."
The folder was something like "_D" and contained a file I recognize from my hard drive. I deleted the temporary folder and suddenly Windows won't let me drag any more files to the CD. I tried browsing manually to the %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning directory, and Windows gave me a "File system error" message when I tried to create a file there. I ran CHKDSK /R, and now the IMAPI service never loads when Windows starts.
Enabling it manually and setting to "automatic" still does not allow me to burn CD's. I've had the problem before where Windows stops the IMAPI service and disables CD-burning, but the solution was always a simple process of starting the service again.
