I never did RMA my 120GB IBM hard drive that clicks a lot - but still seems to work. The data on it isn't very important and it won't hurt me if I suddenly lose it. It turns out that RMA'ing with Hitachi is a super bitch.
But now, my IBM 40GB laptop drive has been clicking very loud lately and it turned up a 'defective drive' code in the diagnostics. So, I called Hitachi to get an RMA. Here are their final terms:
1. They will not drop-ship a drive - even if I provide a credit card number.
2. They will not send me packing material.
3. They will void my warranty if it is not packaged correctly.
4. Packaged correctly according to them means only:
- must have foam rubber (wtf is that)
- bubble wrap is a no-no
- packing peanuts is a no-no
- They even state that wrapping it in towels is a no-no
- it must be in a silver ESD bag
- a pink ESD bag will not do (I happen to have a few pink ones laying around from OTHER hard drive purchases)
5. I must allow 14 business days after the drive is received for my new drive to be shipped.. So ~31 days if you add weekends and 5 days shipping each way.
I've had to RMA drives from Seagate, Western Digital, and Maxtor before. They all allow drop shipment and they don't care how you pack the drive as long as it is packed well.
Part of me thinks that Hitachi is just trying to get out of the warranty by having such stringent hard drive return processes.
Anyone had their warranty voided for packing an IBM drive 'wrong'? I dunno where the hell I'm gonna find foam rubber that is made to fit a laptop drive.
