Argh...phoneline and ethernet LAN problems

I have interfaced two computers via a USB phonline networking kit (3com). The main computer in that setup was LAn'd to a second computer via a switch. The swich is uplinked to the cable modem.

If I disconnect the USB phoneline then th eother 2 work well through the switch. If the phoneline is connected then the computer with both networking interfaces sees both the other computers but the other ethernet one gets stuck looking for other computers and is unable to identify itself in network neighbourhood.
