Argh, my car was broken into

So as soon as I open my snow covered car door, this is what I'm greeted with:

Text

Man this sucks. I've never had to deal with something like this before. I called the cops, they have all the info down, and now I have to get this all fixed. I had a radar detector in the car, which is gone now. Luckily I have the serial number for it, which in my mind increases my chances of getting it back from .0001% to .0002%

And now I just got a call from my insurance, and they won't cover it. :|

Sucks man.

As far as I know, your insurance will never cover any aftermarket equipment unless you purchase that extra coverage.

This is not true as a blanket statement. My insurance company will cover items that are in/on your vehicle during everyday use (aftermarket shocks, bed cover, aftermarket stereo, CDs, etc). However, they will specifically not cover radar detectors. I suspect that is the case with OPs insurance.

Small comfort, I know, but be glad it was snow and not rain. Chances are that very little moisture got into your car due to the freezing temperatures. If it were warmer and raining you could have all kinds of electrical/mold problems in the future.

Actually Ayabe is correct in this case. They wouldn't cover the radar detector because I didn't purchase the extra coverage.

The fact that I live in Utah is a bonus. The air can be so dry that mold has very little chance of growing anywhere because water evaporates so quickly here. There was also no electrical damage, so I can be glad that the overall damage was relatively minimal.

I'm actually a little surprised the cops came out. I had my car broken into a few years ago in my father in laws drive way. We had packed it the night before with all our stuff to get an early start. The bums (to put it nicely) took about $2k worth of stuff. The cops didn't even bother coming out. They just had us fax in a list of items and their serial numbers. Car insurance didn't cover the stuff, but Home Owners did under Property loss. The worst part in my case was they stole my camera with all our christmas pictures, and the birth of my niece on the thing.

I hope the guy who did that to your car get maul and eaten by a bear or a pack of wolves. People who commit petty crimes should be shot in the head on sight, no buts or ifs. Our justice system's simply too soft.

No worries on the thread jack :) Yes it's a 2003 Protege. Mine is so quiet you can barely tell that the thing is on while idling. But then again, I'm a freak when it comes to taking care of the thing.

Awesome. I own a 2003 protege as well. I wasn't the first owner...or else this car would be in top shape.

Pmed you.

i lived in a sketchy hood a while back, and my car got broken into... across the street. Luckily i had comprehensive insurance and with the money left over (had a family friend repair it) I bought a quality alarm installed by a local garage. after that... no more break ins. In my hood people are more afraid of the owners than the police it might be the same with you too.

Sorry to say but when you leave expensive stuff in your car, you are asking for it to be stolen. It doesn't matter where you live, never leave expensive stuff in your car.

This is why I don't even leave quarters visible in my car. I actually know someone who had their car broken into twice in the past few years. Once so that someone could sleep in it, and another time because she left a cup holder full of change which was stolen.

And unless you're in a gated community, thieves will and do roam the streets in nice neighborhoods looking for things to steal. And it has to be a good gate to keep them out.

This. The cars around my truck were broken into outside of school, but my truck had more money combined in electronics than both of the other car's stolen items put together. I always hide my things, for a reason. I see too many GPS's and radar detectors sitting under car windows in parked cars.

That's why I don't have a GPS or Radar Detector I'm too scared that my car would get broken into and stolen the first day.

Many will only cover aftermarket equipment that is physically a part of the car. A stereo that is stuck into the dash is covered but a removable GPS or DVD player would not be.

It happens so often around here that thieves even seeing the mounting tabs will break in hoping to find the GPS/radar under the seat. I use a cheap pre-pay for a cell but always hide it, don't want a $300 window smashed out for a $15 cell..
