Driving me and everybodt else crazy. It only happens for about 10-15 minutes a day, but it's still annoying as hell. Is this a sign of my monitor ready to die? It's a 19" Samsung SyncMaster 955DF, less than a year old.

Yea somethin aint right. Your monitor is prolly on its way out. I would see if you have any warrenty left, since its pretty new. Also, try changing your refresh rate to see if the problem goes away.

Hit the deck!! It's gonna blow.

Seriously, contact Samsung and see if you can get an advance RMA. With them paying shipping both ways. IIRC, they have 3yr warranties.

If you have some device emiiting a high frequency like a cell phone near the monitor, chances are that will happen.

If it just starts whining though for no reason i believe it has something to do with one of the cathode components shaking. Its on the way out; all CRTs eventually have this problem.

However it could also be a really really high pitched whine from the electrical components (inverter?) on the unit.

I usually just smack the side of the monitor or pound on it's top till the sound goes away. Then start saving up for a new one.

A 17" Viewsonic did this to me, just a couple weeks after I bought it. After a few days, it stopped completely, and has never made the noise again. I remember the noise being intermittent, like you described. I found that I could make the noise stop by changing refresh rates. So, there's always a chance your monitor may not be dying an early death, but as with all things, don't count on it! :p

More than likely the monitor is going out.

Try changing your refresh rate. This sometimes helps.

I had the same experience...had the monitor for several months, then the noise started...I changed refresh rates and it stopped...has never happened again over a year later.

I have a phillips 107s, and its just started doing this to me aswell, only young people can hear it lol. 2ys ive had it, had a 3 yr warrenty on it so i better get onto that. Also with my monitor, i have to have my brightness and contrast on 100% to make everything actually look normal now, because if i reset defaults like it used to be, everything appears really dark, games especially you cant even make out the walls.

Now im sure my monitor is on its last legs and all, but for my next one who thinks that some pretty large sterio speakers sitting within a foot of the monitor would do it damage? A bigger table on the cards you think? Also would carting the monitor around in a car a fair bit do any harm.

The whistling stopped for a couple of days but started again this morning, so I changed the refresh rate from 60 to 70 and that seems to have stopped it for the moment. Thanks

It's a known problem with the Samsung 955DF. I had one do the exact same thing.

The good news is Samsung's EXCELLENT customer support. Just call them, and they'll ship you a new monitor. You'll have to go pick it up at your local UPS store, and drop off your old one. Doesn't cost you a dime.

They actually shipped me a 955MB as a replacement which seems a bit lower quality, but I'll take it as that high pitched whining noise was driving me crazy.

60hz really shouldn't be your refresh rate anyway...

Yeah, geez. Push that sucker to its rated limits. If not for you, then for your eyes! I run my monitor at 120Hz (depending on the resolution of course) - it supports 144Hz max, but the drivers for my videocard can't seem to detect that resolution.

My eyes hurt just thinking about it. Add to that the whistling in my ears and it is driving me mad. Mad, I tell you.

I had same problem with my Nokia monitor. I took it to service, and they traced it to PSU. After they changed it I have not had any probs!

I beleive Kristopher is correct...

I have a Samsung 75V (really old cheap monitor) that would emit a really high frequency pitched sound but the monitor never died. I never did figure out what it was, probably just some interference.

I have a dell monitor that makes a horrible high pitched noise occasionally. It's done it for years. Every few months I jam a new piece of metal or a paperclip under the seam in the hood to change the shape of how the hood fits together and that fixes it for a while. no sign of the monitor dying, though I wish it would so I could justify buying an LCD.
