My trusty 1,1 is really messing up. I'm getting graphical screen redraw issues and some sudden lock ups (waiting long enough and it unlocks as if everything is fine)

I am running 2 video cards and noticed that the redraw errors always appear on the 2 screens hooked up to one of the cards so I replaced one of the 7300 with one from another Mac pro here at the studio. Same problem. Running me test right now.

I use this computer for work and can't spend a ton of time on it. If the memory all comes back as good I think it's probably gonna be the motherboard going bad slowly and I will need to replace her.

Computer is old but we still have g5s in service so I was hoping for her to last until the new macpro comes out.

A new motherboard is going to run you ~$750.
If the 1,1 is getting the job done then an iMac should be more than serviceable.
No need to shell out a ton of cash on a new Mac Pro.

If you don't mind me asking, what i/o capabilities specifically? Just want to make sure we look at all the angles.

i run

1. protools hd|native pci-e card to digi 192

2. external 1u 8tb esata raid

3. dual videocards

4. 3 internal harddrives. 1 system 1 for work prints and 1 for projects

5. im always dragging various firewire drives.

I'm planning on upgrading to this as well so it would be another pci-e slot

Probably best to build a hackintosh.

As previously stated, your motherboard replacement costs are going to be huge (if that is the problem) and you have quite a few hardware requirements.

Maybe buy a used Mac Pro for now, get a new one later, then sell the used one you bought.

good idea.

Let me see how the next couple days go. I was able to get thru what I needed to do with no problems.

I hate when issues are intermittent, its hard to troubleshoot.

Apparently the new Sandy Bridge E processors are due November 15th which are the ones that Apple would use in a Mac Pro.

Just something to keep in mind.

I may still end up with the 2010 model 6 core 3.33ghz monster. Thats plenty for what i do. I would love to have new ones out to put pressure on the used market and push the prices down.

well the mac is fine. Thank god. I torture tested it with apple hardware test and it passed every time. I then reinstalled os and found that i was installing older versions of some plug ins. protools 9 in fickle with plug ins thats for sure.
