If you check my signature out you can see my current "rig." Well kinda sorta. I've been doing some upgrading which included adding a new video card, sound card, 2 raptor drives, and 2 huge storage drives.

I ran into a problem which I posted on these boards yesterday. The was the fact that I couldn't tell my motherboard... an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe rev 2.xx board. I have a nice barton 2500+ proc in there I had clocked up to 11x220. Had to stick a vantex iceberg pro 4 cooler on the north bridge and move the aluminum heatstink to the southbridge and use artic silver adhesive to get to that FSB stable though. Before doing that I couldn't get above 210 and be prime stable. Well my problem before was getting my motherboard to boot of my 2 raptors in raid FIRST instead of trying to boot of my ide drives which were in raid as well on a PCI card. I learned through ehre and other various sources that the new 1012 bios had just been released relatively recently and it allowed me to select Sata or SCIS, instead of just SCSI, for the boot order.

Well install the bios, no problem, booted up, no problem. Got it to boot of my raptors first w00t!!!! Was very happy. Everything was going fine. So I shutdown my computer and started to put my side panel back on my case. All of a sudden, I hear a POP and my computer turns on for half a second and turns back off. I'm thinking it was some sort of static discharge but I've never seen or heard of static doing that (cause I had my PSU unplugged from the wall and it's one of those that spins for a minute afterwards for a cooldown and capacitor drain off so no charge is left in it.). Anyhow, my board no longer boots AT ALL. I hit the power switch and I get nothing. The little green light on my motherboard goes on but nothing else.

Fearing I might have killed many different items, I ran over to my friends place and grabbed his PC. I started testing out all my component parts to make sure everything else I had was still working. PSU, hard drives, cpu, fans, sound card, and vid card.... all were still working. The only thing, the motherboard is dead dead dead!!! ARGH!!!!!!

My questions, does anyone know if I can still send this in for warranty or repairs to ASUS? Even though I had switched the heatsinks? I know the warranty is void if I improperly install something but I didn't. Everything was working fine and then pop! Not sure if the warranty covers static and I'm not so sure it was a static discharge, just my assumption.

My other dilemma is the fact that I know in about 6 months or so I was wanting to upgrade anyhow to an AMD 64 anyhow. Should I just go ahead and take the plunge now and say screw it to my old mobo and proc? Least I can sell the proc off to someone if I do. There is one hitch, I was wanting to get the new DFI board that just came out yesterday but it's not really in stock right now anywhere. This means I will have around a 2 week wait before I can get it in and that means 2 weeks without my computer.. ARGH!! I don't know if I can wait that long.

Then again, I don't want to spend money again on a new a7n8x or even a temp board that I know I was going to dump soon as well. That seems too frivolous of a purchase too me.

Anyone have an opinion or solution to this dilemma? My only options as I see it are:

1) Try and get ASUS to repair/cover my dead board. (this might not work and might just be a waste of time and possibly money for shipping expenses)
2) Find some other way to repair it (doubt that will happen unless someone here knows how).
3) Buy a temp board for now. (which I'll dump in a few months and this is a wasted expense)
4) Buy an AMD 64 and board that is currently available. (and end up with a board I may not be satisfied with)
5) Buy an AMD 64 and wait until I can get the DFI board. (this will leave me without a computer for quite a while).

"Pop" would make me look for any capacitors with their tops blown off. I would think it was the ps but it sounds like you've got that covered already. Your warranty is void.

It wasn't a real loud pop at all. and when I looked at the board nothing looked dead on it at all. Everythin looks fine it's just it refuses to power on at all. Well their call center is about to open so I'm going to try and give them a call and see if I can RMA it back. I've had it less then a year too..

You could buy a cheap mobo like this one PCChips for $42us including shipping to use in the intrim. Not particularly fast, no good for overclocking, but they do work pretty well as a basic board. (All mobos from this company ship with the jumper in the "clear CMOS" position, which drives people nuts when they don't rtfm.) You could then sell the mobo and cpu together later and recoup most of your investment.
