I've heard these discussed here before, but a basic overview. The tonsils have little pits that for a small lucky group of people accumulate dead stuff, and breed bacteria. I've never noticed them in my mouth before, but I had a sore throat, and noticed taht it was inflamed, after further investigation, I found a tonsil stone in my left tonsil. It hurt before, and hurts even more now. Anyone got solution to this problem besides tonsil removal?

How did you get it out? I don't know why this affects some people and not others. I eat anything and everything. I am not under any special diet. Candy, coffee, sodas, you name it. And I've never had this!

If it's swollen and painful, you might have a peritonsillar abscess. Tonsilloliths don't usually cause pain or inflamation, they just smell bad and make you feel like something is caught in the back of your throat.

I picked it out with a nail cuticle tool, but theres another white spot that is right next to it, and i think there is another one building up. This has me concerned, as the other one is completley enclosed, and the other one left a HUGE pocket where it was before...and it hurts like hell.

Did you have one of those travel (small) cuticle tools or did you have the full sized one? I wonder how you got it to reach all the way back there. Also, were you able to get it out into the open or did it accidentally slip down your throat? That would suck if you choked on it.

It's a collection of pus near the tonsils. It can be caused by tonsillitis or a strep infection. It's fairly common in adults. You should call your doctor to discuss your symptoms. If it is a peritonsillar abscess he/she'll probably want to aspirate or drain it.

Edit: Oh, and tonsilloliths are one of the risk factors.

Maybe you infected it or opened it up to infection.

I only did that like an hour ago (rite before i made the OP) so i dont see how that could've caused the problem.

I've coughed up about 5 or 6 tonsoliths in the past few years... Weird, as I've never had them before that. They tend to come flying out of my mouth when I'm running.

There is a great joke here, but I'll leave it alone.

Tonsils? Tonsil stone ?? Argggh

I had them removed when I was 9 years old. :)

Glad they are gone.

http://www.doctorhoffman.com/xlith.htm

"You could try gargling frequently with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of table salt mixed with one pint of water? gargle with about 1/4 cup of this mixture three times per day, after meals.)
? You could also gargle with a mouthwash called Alkalol, which is essentially salt water combined with a variety of natural aromatic extracts; some people prefer Alkalol to plain salt water. Most other commercial mouthwashes contain sugar or alcohol, which are pleasant-tasting but are, in the long run, fairly irritating if used frequently."

Tonsil stones are a lot more common than most think. Most of the people thinking "Oh gross, I'm so glad I don't have those" .. have those :) They're just out of sight and out of mind.
