There is some car in the parking lot at work with the stock (horn) alarm going off. It's been happening for the past 5 hours!! It goes off for like 5 minutes, is silent for like 2, and then starts up again. My office is right by the window, so this fricking thing is blaring at me. It's driving me up the wall.

When is it appropriate to smash this car's window, pop the hood and cut the battery cable? That's what I feel like doing right now.

Send a mass email to all office employees... Describe the car and ask the owner to stop the alarm

My company is a little large for that, plus it's a good chance it's not one of our employees. This is in downtown Oakland, so it could be someone from any number of the buildings around here.

I always laugh when car alarms go off and nobody does a damned thing about it. How is that alarm "helping" to deter criminals?

Especially in California....all Californians feel the need for a car alarm and so many alarms go off everyone just ignores them

standard alarm sounds are an annoyance and nobody even looks anymore. If you have a different alarm sound, people will at least see what's going on. Crooks don't like attention. Deterrent, just like Da Club. Think about what happens to a car with no alarm. The crooks could spend an hour on it and nobody would know anything's wrong.

Also don't forget about the alarms that page out.

Its the same deal here in surbupia Milwaukee. Car alarms will go off while I'm across the street at the playground with my kids. Nobody skips a beat unless it goes off for ever then people just get POed that its even on.

I love when people park their cars and turn them on too... Dude/Dudette, you're in suburban heaven, 10ft away from your car at a playground. I don't think the alarm will be needed.

Argh! Still going off. I might just jump out my 15th floor window and land on the hood.

idea: toss something at the car....aim for where the battery might be under the hood.

Well the good news is, it' stopped. The bad news is I heard that sound so long today, I can still hear it in my head.

If you drop a desk from the 15th floor you could easily silence it.
