Because most of the times, for research papers, you need to do
research, not just read the book and write up a report.
Depends on the kind of paper. Research yes, but not necessarily research of other opinions/disections
of the book.
For example if I were writing a paper on Clemens' (Twain's) Puddinhead Wilson I might need to look up the use of fingerprinting at the time, or if there were real cases of switched babies, or how many light-skinned African Americans were passing as white. None of that is research on the book itself.
For an entirely different kind of paper on "critical evaluations of Puddinhead Wilson over time" I might try to show how evaluations of the work have changed over time as society's treatment of African Americans has changed.
