My chain keeps coming off the tract after 10 minutes or so of work. I take the side cover off and put the chain back on, pull out the bar to tighten it and it still comes loose. What am I missing?

Post make and model please.

1. Loosen the guide bar retaining nuts located on the side of the saw where the guide bar attaches to the motor.

2. Locate the chain tension adjustment screw on the front of the motor housing near the guide bar.

3. Turn the screw clockwise to increase tension, counterclockwise to decrease tension. At the optimum setting, the chain should be snug but move freely when pulled with a gloved hand.

4. If the tension screw stops and the chain is still too loose, replace the chain.

5. When the chain tension is adjusted, tighten the guide bar retaining nuts while holding the guide bar in its uppermost position.

Usually, you have to do more than just pull out the bar - there's usually a screw to adjust the tension. Additionally, you may not be tightening the bar down sufficiently - the vibration of the chainsaw running loosens it just enough to slide loose.

As Dr. Pizza said, there should be a screw to adjust the tension. You might also want to give it some lubricaiton before adjusting it again, since the chain is coming off anyway. I need to break mine out soon, as Hurricane Season is just around the corner here.

Stop trying to cut through bone.

Just get some hungry hogs if you're trying to get rid of bodies.

Also, I had a similar problem with a Poulan. A repair guy explained to me that the oil pumps on them suck. The oil pump had gone bad, the chain got hot, stretched, popped off.
