My 45GB Maxtor drive failed today out of the blue. My Epox 8K3A+ doesn't have an option to enable the SMART feature so I didn't see this coming. I still have 1 year of warranty left on the drive from Maxtor so I can get new storage but what I want to know is this: can/will they fix the drive or will they not even bother and just send a replacement to me? I have over 20GB of mp3s that I don't want to have to rerip and redownload. Let's not even mention the archived schoolwork and downloads that I will have a hell of a time recovering.

Btw, when I say failed I mean that the drive doesn't show up in the POST or in Windows. It doesn't fscking exist anymore. :(

Sorry man but everything is hosed. Are you sure there just isn't some lose connection or something? Maxtor will ship out a drive that has been repaired previously and they will repair your drive and ship it to someone else if their's dies. Maxtor does absolutely no data recovery.

That's really sad to hear (re no data recovery). But the drive is dead. I hear the almost IBM-like "click click" which was followed by a temporary system freeze. When I regained control I checked Event Viewer and found events announcing the death of the drive. I then rebooted and checked to see if the BIOS was seeing the drive, it was not. It's dead. :(

I guess I'll RMA it tonight. The drive I have was a special version (being 45GB rather than 40GB). Will Maxtor shortchange me and send me a 40GB drive if they don't have any 45GB drives or will they send a 60GB drive instead?

I don't think they would send a smaller one.
You'll probably get a 60gb one.
I had to RMA a 1.7gb a few years ago & they sent me an 8gb as replacement.
:)
