Argggh. CPU died (I think)

What's your guess?

  • CPU

  • Motherboard

  • RAM

  • PSU

  • gremlins (though isn't it ALWAYS Gremlins?)

Woke up this morning to a frozen PC.
Hit the reset and got met with 5 beep error msg

Tried removing and reseating RAM, and got long, repeating beeps.
GPU pulled gave me the same 5 fast beeps.

It was a lovely Phenom II X2 555 BE that OCed to 3.5 with all 4 cores unlocked.

Rest in peace my good friend.
(new 555 ordered)

I think bad motherboards are FAR more common than bad CPU's. I have not had a bad CPU since my XP 2400, but probably 10 bad motherboards.

That is true.
I have never had a bad CPU myself either in countless isntalls and OCs.
MBs have fried though.
I have a new 555BE on order already with NE. I have no way to check if its MB or CPU, so I gotta replace one or the other and start from there.

Here's hoping you get another good unlock/overclock!

If your getting beeps then you can be pretty sure it is NOT the cpu in itself. Send the cpu to me and I can tell you all about it :)

You sure about that?
What SHOULD happen if I boot a good MB with RAM and GPU installed but no CPU?

I've only seen physically broken CPU's. I have seen CPU's that faded a bit, like they couldn't clock as high as they could years ago, but none of them has ever just died on me.

Nothing should happen. No beeps or anything.

I'm just talking from personal experience. I've built/fixed/blah/blah more than a 1,000 computers and I never recall a beeping mobo being a processor problem. Obviously i've had computer reboots/freezing/posting issues with bad cpu's but if the mobo is beeping then the cpu is at least working good enough to run the mobo through its system checks.

PS: Double check that you have definitely cleared the cmos on your mobo.

I'd cancel, find s CPU and test before you buy anything. I'm betting mobo

I wont be able to find a CPU around here to test with. I know nobody that "does computers" as a hobby.

I may just order the same MB I have (there's an open box at NE).
Get them both shipped, return or resell the one I don't need.

Have you tried resetting CMOS and thus undoing the Unlock? I'm just wondering if one of your Cores packed it in.

Yeah I tried the CMOS over and over this morning. That was my 1st thought too.
Didn't work.

I ordered a replacment (identical) MSI 785GTM-E45 too.
That way I can test both. minimize my waiting time and then just sell whichever one I don't need. (or return to NE and pay restocking fees).

CPUs usually don't just die, the user usually kills them. If your voltage and cooling has been on tab, i would say its the mobo. I would either find a friend with a compatible mobo, or just look around the internet. If it still doesn't work, return the mobo and get a CPU, if it does...well, keep the mobo lol.

never messed with the voltage (so it was stock)
cooling was a AC64 Freezer with Arctic 5 on it. Couldn't really read temps as the unlocked cores screws that up it seems. But it never ran it seemed.

take out the cpu and power it up, i bet you will get the same five beeps.

also when you removed the memory you said you got the same beeps. shouldn't you have gotten different beeps then if you removed memory?

it most likely your mobo took a shit on you.

No I got different beeps with the memory removed.
I got the "standard" long, repeating beeps. Not 5 short beeps. I see I posted that incorrectly in the OP. OOPS!

I wouldn't have ordered another cpu. You should take some time to figure what is really at fault. It gets tricky sometimes, and the easiest approach is to use spare parts.

OP's already stated that he has no spare parts to use, nor does he have anyone close by to borrow parts from.

So, since he's almost certain the issue is with either the mobo or CPU, he's done the only thing he can for the sake of expediency - order both, and re-sell/return what he doesn't need.
