Arggg, laptop AND new Comp or just laptop??

i'll be headed for university soon, and i need to think about my computer issue... I know i'm getting a laptop for sure.. probably this one by CompaqCompaq

but the thing is, i have a really old computer at home and i was wondering if i should do a minor upgrade for it so that i'll have a comp and a laptop in university. To give you an idea of how old the computer is, my minor upgrade will consist of getting this mobo and CPU
and this Geforce FX 5500Geforce FX 5500

This comp will mainly be used for gaming... but the thing is, is this minor upgrade even worth it?? or will gaming be even better on the laptop than on the PC???

I ain't sure how good the ATI Radeon Xpress 200M in on the laptop but if I was guessing I would say it's not worth upgrading. If the system doesn't have at least 1gb of memory it's def not worth it.

If you can find something like a 6600GT AGP or similar then I say go for it. But that FX5500 is old, old news. You can pickup 6600GT's in this forum used for $65-$85 shipped used.
 
Its not designed for gaming, dont expect it to run anything more than hl 1 or starcraft. 3D performance will be poor.
 
so would gaming be better if i had a seperate PC (with sempron 3300 and a FX5500??). ANd i can't upgrade the cideocard within a laptop by myself can I? i hear it is really difficult or expensive to get someone to do it. So is the only way to play recent games on a laptop just to get one of those really expensive gaming laptops?
 
A desktop replacement laptop would suit you as an FX5500 would also seriously suck. The entire FX line was pretty bad and the lower end cards such as the 5500 were pretty useless at gaming, even in their day back in 2003. A sempy is fine, you need a 6600GT to game though. It will run farcry/doom3/half life 2/battlefield 2 at reasonable settings.
