On my lunch break I just went out and bought a couple of cd's, and one of them apparently is a SACD but was mixed in with the regular cds. Just my luck. Seeing as how it's opened, they probably won't let me return it, so is there any way to rip the files and burn them on a regular cd? If not, I guess it's ebay time. Yay. :disgust:

if your dvd/cd player plays it, keep it. SACD is audio experience in another level. as to your questions, i dont know answers.

it should play fine on a regular cd player .. you just won't get the SACD part of it.

Apparently it's not hybrid, because it doesn't work in my car.

I'm pissed cuz 99% of the listening I do is in my car (I drive a lot), not to mention my system is sweet. There goes $15 down the tubes, and I'm gonna have to blow another $15 on a regular copy of it. arg. I'm just pissed that they had the SACD's mixed in with the regulars, so a guy on his lunch break can easily get confused when not inspecting them. If it was a hybrid, I'd be more than happy to have bought it, because if SACD becomes "the standard" I'd already have one. But since there is no standard, I refuse to buy the modern day equivalent of a betamax player.

DAMN YOU TECHNOLOGY!! :frown:

If it's hybrid it will play on a regular CD player (it has a redbook layer). If not, you're SOL.

SACD is the closest thing the digital world has to analog recording, DSD really is amazing.

What CD is it?

I can use SACD's, if it's something I'm interested in I might help you out.

Oh and no, you can't rip it - not directly anyway. With proper equipment you can record the analog output (still better than CD), but you'd have to have the equipment PLUS you'd have to down-sample it to create a redbook CD. You might as well just sell it & grab the redbook version.

Since your Google is broken, it's a Super Audio CD, a different encoding method from regular CDs that requires a SACD player (just like DVD-Audio requires a DVD-A player).

there have been numerous SACD vs DVD-A battles like -R/+R media, but i am yet to see a clear answer to it. all i know is they are both only mediums and the actually quality of recording heavily depends on how well it is made. there are no SACD/DVD titles i would buy at the moment (choices are too limited) but according to those who do dig the SACD camp seems to have more releases.

There are a lot more now than there were a year ago.

We talking about players that support both?

so how is that article you link to is any different from millions of sacd vs dvd articles i could google? not flaming you, just curious :) i noticed the guy who wrote it is swedish but other than that i am not sure how it is any more convincing. the thing is people with most revealing and best gear are split on the superiority. what good is all the technology at theoratical level if it does no good to consumer? again, i personally think the selection of music is too limited on both sides to become more (relatively) mainstream.

Yup, there are several on the market for <$200.

If you want to include the upper end of the market there are even more.

Take it back and try to exchange it for the regular CD version. If you explain it maybe they will let you.

Interesting. Complain to both the store you purchased it and the distributor of the CD, one or the other would probably let you exchange it.

Plus bump to find out what album it is.

yes, there's a whole slew of them now.

OP
take it back. they'll refund it. Just say "it doesn't play" in my CD player, I'd like to exchange it for a CD.

Actually, our CC used to do this as long as it was for the same title... We had a decent selection of SACD/DVD-A and they used to get mixed into the regular population of cd's....

Just be nice when you ask in store about it and you'd be surprized how willing they might be to help ya out.

Hm... I see now that you're right, I hadn't checked in a while. I think I found my birthday present. I'll finally have a use for those 5.1 inputs on my receiver :)
