g/f and I spent some time cleaning up my house.. she vacuum and dusted, I picked up/arranged/cleaned everything else.

After we were done, I went to vacuum my office... WTF... the roller isn't spinning. I take the bottom plate off and the belt is like mashed and melted, there's ball bearings all over the place, and what appears to be a tensioner (never seen a tensioner on a vacuum before...?) that is also broken from what I assume is the belt flying all over.

I was like hey babe.. did you notice anything weird with the vacuum?..... yeah - it was grinding and REALLY hard to push, and making funny noises - but it worked okay for me

WTGDF. If you are using something (vacuum, car, computer, blender, ANYTHING) and it is GRINDING and MAKING FUNNY NOISES then you should take 5 seconds and ****** CALL ME, and STOP USING IT

That's what you get for being a slob and making her clean your place. ;)

You're supposed to make sure it's nice, clean, and presentable for her to visit.

So where in this story did she break the vacuum?

At the point where it started to make grinding noises and she failed to power it off and find out why. This is kind of like "The oil pressure light came on but the car was still running so I drove it home, is that ok?".

exactly...

the belt starting slipping. at that point it was hard to push. she should have stopped RIGHT THERE. instead .. eh.. it's still working i guess... keeps going... grinding... some banging.. she thinks about stopping put she only had a little more to do... bang bang... dead.

and note that I wasn't mad at her at all.. I was just like it's not a big deal - but from now on if you're using something and it is making ANY kind of wierd noise - TURN IT OFF

You're on the right track. I wouldn't be to hard on her though. Your POS vacuum was probably on it's last legs anyway. :p
