Areca 1280ML + Win7 64bit = which driver?

Which of these drivers am I supposed to download for using my 1280ML with Win7 ultimate 64bit?

ftp://ftp.areca.com.tw/RaidCards/AP_Drivers/Windows/Driver/64Bit/

There is "Beta", scsiport, and storport.

This would be for a clean install.

Also I have a G2 160GB X-25M...can I use it as a pass-thru disk on the 1280ML (thereby taking advantage of the 2GB read/write caching on the card) and still have trim function properly or am I better off attaching it to the SATA on my mobo (Asus P5E Pro WS)?

TIA,
Phil

Contact Erich Chen and ask.

Pretty sure you'll want the STORPORT driver for Win7, but its better to ask. There is nothing in the BETA directory, so you can safely exclude that.

you aren't going to get to keep TRIM by running the G2 off the 1280ML. I'm not sure if you'd be better off using the ICH SATA or Areca card.

use storport for windows 7. scsiport.sys is from windows NT. windows 7 probably supports it for backwards compatibility reasons but use storport.

 awesome, thanks guys for the quick help here.

I'll no doubt check out the SSD in both configs just to satisfy my own curiosity but I run all my drives as pass-thru on the card now (except the raid array of course) and this config has been noticably faster than using the onboard sata.

So trim with Intel only works if the SSD is connected directly to an Intel chipset via SATA?

I was hoping/thinking trim would work if my drive is a pass-through disc on the raid card but I must admit I have no factual basis (nor have I done my google homework yet either, will be done soon of course) for this hope.

Thanks again everyone!

There is no TRIM support on current (1.48) FW.
Drives with garbage collection will stay optimal in passthrough and RAID configurations, however.

hmmm...I found surprisingly little on the web regarding the question of putting an X-25M on the areca versus thru the mobo sata.

Found the usual "I've got 16 SSD's in raid-0 on this areca and it tis da bomb!" but nothing relating to the less over-the-top configs involving a single SSD for use with the OS.

Rubycon thanks for the followup info. In your opinion the Intel G2 has good enough garbage collection to stay mostly optimal in passthrough config? This is my hope but I have not started the process yet.

Intel drives don't have GC IIRC. If you have 2GB cache the drive should stay optimal longer than if just plugged into AHCI ports.

If its a non os drive it can be plugged into AHCI and the SSD toolbox run on it to see how optimal it is after a while, etc.

I've used many Indilinx as well as enterprise SAS SSD on these controllers and degradation happens but it takes a while! I'm talking many weeks of constant thrashing data to and from the arrays. I have 4GB cache on 1680IX-24 hosts.

I'm trying to download these drivers too but I'm getting user/pass on Areca's FTP. Any ideas?

NVM: Only had IE installed cause of fresh install. Installed Chrome and tried again and problem solved.
