Are ZIP drives just f***ed up or is it me?

I just made the innocent mistake of trying to transfer a song form one comp to another via a zip 100 disk. First I had to go searching for a disk that would work on the first computer (the one I had wouldn't). Once I had the song on the disk, I brought it up to the second comp, which promptly froze when I tried to open the disk. So I try to use the disk on a third computer only to find that the drive is no longer seen by windows. I end up going to a fourth computer, where it finally works. Then, I have to transfer the song via the a network from the fourth to the third, and then the third to the second. (The first isn't on the network. An aggravating 10 minutes.

That sounds like a problem with either those specific drives, or other computer problems. Zip drives in general are pretty reliable.

I forgot to mention that the first computer has a ZIP-250 drive while all the other ones are ZIP-100. The drives are functional, I think the 250/100 difference is causing it.

Also, another point, ZIP drives never seem to eject when you press the button. I always have to eject in software before anything happens.

That's odd. The hardware eject button always worked for me back when I had Zips.

I've got an external Zip250 (parallel port) drive at work and an internal zip100 at home. I ALWAYS have problems trying to get the 250 to read a 100 disk. It will work, but it takes about 10X longer to read/write to a 100MB disk than a 250MB disk. The internal I've got at home has worked great for a couple years now, not one problem.

I don't have any problems with the eject buttons either.

My Zip 100 drive will not eject through software, because of some stupid error, and when you push the button on the front, it "thinks" about things for a minute before ejecting.
BTW, I've had no trouble transfering files between a computer with an IDE Zip 100 and a parallel Zip 100 drive. The main problem is that some files these days won't fit. 😉

WinNT4 and Win2K are a little slow with ejecting Zips. The whole HAL thing and limiting direct access to hardware is to "blame."
