Are your 3DMark2001SE scores stable? Mine aren't- what's wrong?

I upgraded to a P4 2.53 Ghz, 845E (MSI Max), DDR 266, with Geforce 4 Ti 4600 (Gainward). I should get around 11,500 3dMark score with this system.

My 3d performance is very bizarre. I get generally around 8700 to 9500 on the 3DMark2001SE benchmark, but at times I have gotten up to 10799.

The strange thing is in between fiddling around with motherboard settings I will get a "high" score of over 10,000 but after a reboot or even if the system has bee up for a while, the score will drop to 9000 or even lower. I can't seem to find any pattern to this wild changes, but again for the most part the score is around 9000.

I have gotten the same results with fresh installs of Windows 2000 and Windows XP Pro. I am installing the Intel 845E drivers, and in the case of W2K there's not even any potential issue with "old" Nvidia drivers AFAIK. I've tried both the latest Detonator drivers as well as the official WHCL drivers, including each with fresh OS installs.

I am really pulling my hair out over this. I can also subjectively tell a difference in speed in the one 3D game I play, where FPS do go down about 25% off the highest peak.

So what is going on? I've not encountered a problem like this before?
