Are you uninterested in console games?

I am a PC Gamer at heart and have been for fifteen years. When it comes to console games however I am completely and absolutely uninterested. I just spent $440 on a new videocard yet at my work I have a PS3 coupled with a 42" widescreen and Modern Warfare 2 and I haven't given it a second look.
I seem to have this odd idea that consoles are for children. Whenever anyone at work is playing a deathmatch I can't escape the idea that with my mouse and keyboard I would own then all.
I attempt to relay this information but the consolers just don't buy it(don't get it).
If I didn't have A PC I would probably never play another videogame in my lifetime.
Am I alone in this train of thought?
I wonder....

I'd play games on a console if the games used a KB + Mouse. Controllers for anything other than sports games suck assk.

I enjoy both although I'm finding myself having less and less interest in newer games that come out.

yeah, that's basically how I feel, except I've been doing PC games for more like 25 years ;) . Sometimes I play Wii games since they're (well, the good ones are) something completely different from PC games, but the Xbox/Playstation stuff just strikes me as crippled PCs.

When the end-goal of all games becomes one's ability to snipe from 1,000 yards away with a headshot you'll be right.

Until then console games sell SO well because, simply, they work. Console games aren't just for kids: the vast majority of my games are rated either T or M. Console games also enjoy a significant early release period for many high profile games (examples off the top of my head = GTA IV and Mass Effect). Then, of course, there are the games that are exclusive to consoles which you miss out on entirely.

So while you're obsessing over aim down to the accuracy of a pixel, I've already beaten the game on my Xbox 360 and moved on to the next great game. I'm also playing these games on a MUCH bigger screen and with an audience of friends and family because I'm playing on a couch... not a chair in the corner of a room.

I also play computer games and very much enjoy them. In fact, when I play computer games I can get headshots, too. However, I'm not so ignorant as to think that is the one and only thing that matters in gaming. As a result I enjoy gaming as a whole far more than you, I'm sure.

I'm a PC gamer at heart but I've had fun with certain console games.

I enjoyed TDU and played it for a while. I managed to get pretty far into Mass Effect before losing interest.

But I bought the original Assasin's Creed not too long ago, and it's a great example of a popular console game with high ratings that just doesn't cut it for me. I played for a night or two, marveled at the graphics, and then forgot about it.

I mean - following a guy down a street and having to hit some button at just the right time to pick his pocket? And endlessly getting teleported back to the same spot when you fail?

No thanks.

The last console I was actually interested in was the Atari 2600. :)

oh oh oh... 2600 is the magic number!

I could have had 25 years but I didn't start playing pc games until I was 20 and built my first PC.(486DX2)

The only console games I have are EA sports games and that's only because I can get them for $20 brand new. I barely play them, but will fire them up once in a while if I feel like playing some Hockey, Tennis, or Golf. Not much else appeals to me (I bought a few PS3 games a while back, but never completed any of them and sold them shortly thereafter).

Maybe once the new FF game comes out I will pick that up, but that's the only thing that is even close to being on my radar.

KT

Edit: I have tried out some shooters from the PS3 demo store, but damn, I cannot fathom how people can play those things on a console, they are frustrating as hell.

Im mainly uninterested in consoles for the following reasons...

Both my main PC and HTPC are completely capable of playing modern games maxed out...plus add a couple of Xbox 360 controllers to my HTPC and I basically have a 360. Also, girlfriend loves MP through emulators...Mario Kart, Street Fighter...consoles cant do that...unless modded perhaps.

PC gaming is cheaper...hard ware MIGHT be a bit more expensive depending on how "high-end" your computer must be or based on how often you upgrade...but in the end you basically HAVE TO PAY FOR CONSOLE GAMES...$40-$60 a game adds up. My friend has a shit load of PS3 and 360 titles, most bought on launch day or soon there after and has spend $1000's on games. I pirate video games...yeah fuck you...most of them are shit anyways, thank goodness I didnt waste my money...but this does, atleast in my case severly lower my spending. Plus, on top of that, PC games are always likely to sell immediately at a lower price or lower in price far before their console brethren.

Other than that I like console games...easy play (pop disk in it starts) and offline multiplayer (something that no PC game supports anymore...except the new Street Fighter) I love...but not enough to get one...maybe soon, 360 arcade at lower than $200 now a days looks tempting...

No interest here but the wife has been bugging me all year to buy a Wii system. I'd rather spend the money on something else.

Console gaming is uninteresting to me except for some fighters. Of course, the majority of PC games are uninteresting to me as well. I guess I have a limited amount of time to waste so i am very picky about what games i waste my time on :D

I don't play consoles because I enjoy the technical aspects of PC gaming. We might see full tessellation on PC games before consoles for example. I enjoy experiencing the latest and greatest in graphics technology.

I also find console gaming to be very "passive" like watching a movie. I initially started playing PC games because I enjoyed their complex and cerebral nature, they demanded a great deal from the gamer. Needless to say, being a gamer in the early mid 90s means something very different than a gamer of today (which I think is more akin to a movie aficionado).

PC games are no longer like that though, (with a couple exceptions like X3) - which is why I don't do much gaming anymore unless it's a social thing (with friends, family etc).

You can also think about preference of console games reflecting overall general changes in peoples attitudes. I think people care more about being entertained, than they do about learning and broadening their knowledge.

Well, pleae don't judge an entire platform of gaming on Assassin's Creed. I, too, bought it and like you tired of it VERY quickly. It is one of the few games I've paid for but never beaten and I don't plan to. That was a very overrated game.

AndroidVageta... your reasoning of why you don't like console gaming is because you STEAL your PC games? By that criminal logic, why don't you just break into a store with a ski mask on and steal some console games, too?

The only part of that statement that made any sense (and, not insignificantly, isn't illegal) was that PC games sell cheaper. Yes, PC games are usually $10 cheaper new... so after a mere 51 games purchased a PC gamer with an $800 computer will be ahead of a console gamer with a $300 Xbox 360. It will take a LONG time to buy 51 games.

Also, please explain how consoles can't play Mario Kart or Street Fighter. They ARE console games so by that very definition consoles are more apt to play them. Period. If you claim you can't find those consoles anymore they are available as downloads on new consoles.

I don't think liking a wider breadth of games really means you enjoy gaming more than someone with a narrower focus.

I'm primarily a PC gamer but I do have a Wii and am picking up a PS3. Control issues aside one isn't vastly superior to the other. So for me I am interested in console games.

I'm pretty much uninterested in all games right now. There are only so many "yearly sequel to big-budget game with fancy graphics and eight hours of gameplay" you can take, and that's really all that's coming out any more. More of the same...unless you count Wii-Waggle minigame shovelware as something "different". :p

It's not like the PC is any better either. It has WOW, a bunch of WOW-wannabes, and (usually) shoddy ports of console games. Wahoo?

ixelion, I somewhat agree with what you're saying. Certain PC games are absolutely more complicated than some console games. For instance, although the two were largely the same, Command & Conquer 3 had more gameplay options on the PC than the Xbox 360 (I own both).

However, you can't make broad statements that console gaming is more passive than PC gaming. Plenty of games play exactly the same on the two platforms (e.g. Fallout 3). Besides using a controller vs. a mouse the gameplay is interchangeable.

I believe console gaming has come a LONG way and now actually enjoys many benefits over PC gaming. But, I must agree with you that serious gaming in the early-to-mid 90's was the domain of the PC. Of course, this topic isn't about gaming from 15 years ago... it is about 2009.

Dying to know what these benefits are.

It's just an elitist attitude that some of you have with PC gaming. I love PC gaming and dump too much money into it but love console gaming as well. Both are great and I welcome both as well. The only problem I have is consolizing PC games.

I enjoy both although I'm finding myself having less and less interest in newer games that come out.

I'm glad I am not the only one. I have been increasingly apathetic with new game releases. I have always preferred PC gaming but I bought an Xbox a couple of years ago, primarily for the variety of sports games. Ironically, of course, the variety of sports games has been decreasing on the consoles as well due to exclusive agreements and some companies just discontinuing games (such as College Hoops -- one of my favorites).

I just can't find a PC game that grabs me and pulls me in. I am really looking for an MMO with the sandbox appeal that SWG had on release, but unfortunately, most MMO companies are either copying WoW's simplistic model or making theme park MMOs. I understand these companies are trying to make money and the way to make money is releasing games that are simple to learn/play, but that doesn't make it suck any less for people like me that want a sandbox world. I had high hopes for Star Trek Online, but the accounts I've read are not encouraging.

Good point. I used to bash the Wii as "not a real console," but I bought one for my wife for Xmas and I am really looking forward to it. It should be a refreshing change from the norm and it might take me back to my roots of gaming in the late 70s/early 80s, when games might have been simple but were a blast.
