I ordered a living room set and the store charged me $90 for delivery of a couch, loveseat, ottoman and area rug. Should I still tip the deliver guys? how much?

If it was free delivery then maybe. But at $90, F that.

Offer them some drinks and make sure the place is clean and easy to get in/out.

I hate the notion of obliged tipping. Tipping should be reserved to just reward someone doing an exceptional job. It shouldn't ever be something you're supposed to do.

No tip. And the delivery was free (at least I didnt pay a separate fee for it). I did offer them cold water after the delivery but that was it.

I tipped the movers when I moved across the country. Of course I didn't pay for the moving itself so I don't know how much it cost or any of that. Beyond that the driver and movers both did an excellent job and went above and beyond so the tip was really about the good service not required tipping.

I am a stickler for tipping and I've never tipped for furniture delivery. I might do so if it was particularly ugly out or something like that.

I had the same situation. Bought a couch and ottoman, place charged $100 for delivery. If they wanted tip, they should work for a place that does free delivery (or at the very least has bargaining room on their prices).

Furniture delivery guys are a "maybe", but I usually give a tip for heavy items placed up or down floors. We had a stupid heavy full bedroom set delivered and assembled in the upstairs master this Summer. Considering the effort and time, they deserved it.

I wouldn't tip for the OP's items being delivered to a main floor living room, especially when there's a $90 delivery charge.

Movers, are a fuck yes...assuming you don't want your shit in pieces when you receive at the destination.

I tipped my 2 movers $25 each, but that was only because they went above and beyond when I was living in my apartment.

I bought a couch and had it delivered, but there was an odd angle in my entry-way and the couch was too long to fit in. I was also on the 2nd floor. So the guys jerry-rigged a hoist with their tow straps and brought it over the balcony through our screen door. Did a damn good job and didn't damage the couch.

Edit: Actually they were the delivery guys for the couch, not movers.

Bullshit. They break it, they buy you new stuff. Fuck them.

Well, I was exaggerating/being somewhat sarcastic. However, no, most often you have to buy extra insurance on the items, which gets really expensive for a whole house if you want to go with full value protection. Otherwise, it's a paltry reimbursement by weight.

This is pretty standard, so shopping around won't make much of a difference unless you can find a guy willing to work it out in the contract.

You can probably also get some kind of "moving coverage" through your homeowners/renters insurance company, but it's still an extra cost and who actually enjoys the hassle of replacing or getting reimbursed for lost/damaged items?

All I'm saying is if you're trusting a house worth of possessions to a crew, why not give them an incentive to treat your shit kindly.

Depends on how good they are. If they're bad, no way. If they go above and beyond, are extra nice quick & careful, then yes.

2 Months ago I had a couch delivered to my new apartment, free delivery.

Two guys that were busting ass brought it up and assembled it. I gave them each a glass of water and $10.

I'd tip for that too, sounds like they did much more than was expected. Most movers would just drop off the couch and tell you that it was your problem to get it inside.

If they do a good job, then I do. I had two guys deliver a washer and dryer three flights of stairs. They didn't touch a thing, stacked the units, connected everything, tested them and cleaned up everything all in about 15 minutes. $10 for each.

when I moved last year, I tipped my movers just because they did a fucking awesome job. like, I was seriously impressed -- these guys showed up at my old apartment, had all my junk on their truck before I could blink, and the entire move was done in under 3 hours (and that's with an hour of driving in between the apartments).

they charged me $300 for 3 guys and I threw an extra $40 on top of that.

Always offer beer, water, and a $20 or more to folks carrying large items into and out of your home.

$40 for 3 guys? that is mean. they probably got confused trying to split it amongst them. should have just left $45

Nope. Tipping is not mandatory. Nor would I do it for movers. They do not make a "tip wage" for their work. Personally I hate the concept of a tip wage in the first place. I hate tipping period. I do it, and I tip well because I used to be a bartender back in the day so I know it sucks not getting a tip because working a tip wage jobs means without tips you are boned.

Still, I personally would rather that it be something ON TOP as in an actual tip, and not something that is a must have.
