Are you supposed to tip the Starbucks coffee-makers?

I go to Starbucks almost every day and get a Venti Latte or Venti Frappachino to start off my day with a jolt of caffeine. It has never even crossed my mind to tip them - I mean, they just pour the pre-mixed liquid into a cup and spray whipped cream on top. How is that something to tip for? They didn't spill it on me? Anyways, friend who used to work at Starbucks said that you're supposed to tip them because that's where they make the real money. And how much? 15% of $4.30 is 65 cents.

Think of the opening scene from Reservior Dogs.

If your going to tip them, might as well tip everybody in the service industry, including the people who pump your gas.

As far as the opening scene from Reservoir Dogs is concerned, you can see the numerous threads on tipping on these boards.

As far as you tipping them, if you frequent there very often, which you do, I personally would tip at least an extra dollar or two a week. I mean if you can afford to waste your money on a $4-5 cup of coffee, can't you scrounge up an extra buck or two?

I worked at a coffee place. I didn't expect tips, but sometimes people would... added up to $5 or maybe a max of $10 on a good day.

I just got raped in the tipping though. Bought my mom a spa thing (massage etc) gift certificate. Went in there, paid by debit, and the question comes up: add tip yes no? I'm like... uhhh... okay so you're supposed to tip them, and I'm not gonna make my mom pay the tip when she comes later, so I should do it. Do I do it now? The question is staring me in the face, the two girls in there are waiting anxiously for some reason. I thought to ask, but you don't ask if you're supposed to tip... So I made a half assed attempt at hitting yes, but it didn't register, which gave me another split second to think... I didn't want to make a faux pas and have them be all pissy with my mom when she got there in a few weeks, so I tipped them then. When they saw on their end that I tipped them, they giggled and I left completely confused.

Apparently though I'm supposed to not tip them, and then I give my mom some cash to tip them with when she goes. Fvck. So they make off like bandits with 2x a tip cause I wasn't in the know about who I'm supposed to tip.

seems excessive considernig the price of their coffee. unless you have some insane huge order where u ask them to do extra... i don't see the point

I don't tip at the drive-thru at McD's, so I'm not tipping the emo fvck making my latte.

Not that I drink that sh!t anyway, but it's the same thing.

at my starbucks, there are little plastic boxes that you can put tips in. i don't even recall seeing a starbucks in nyc without one.

You don't have to tip them, but it's just nice if you did. I work at a tea shop (you know, one of those tapioca type places) part time while going to school full time now ... and with the money I make there ... well it's CRAP 😛 and I'm greatful at the end of a shift to get perhaps $1-$10 extra in tips. Like I said though, not required, but it's just nice to for the service. Mind you, the tip also gets divided among all the workers there.

i dont think you should tip them a 15%. they're not exactly serving you, its like going to mickey d's and tipping the cashier.

Screw them. All they do is press a button and you get a over-produced latte. No way.

I've tipped them nearly all the times I've made a purchase there in the past. However, beginning in 2005, I'm going to stop that practice. However, I do have a local roasting house that makes coffee 10 times better than Starbucks - and their prices are about 30% lower. I'll continue to top these hard-working folks with their locally owned and friendly business.

There is only a tip jar at the Drive-Up window, at the Starbucks I go to. I'll throw in $.50 - $1, if I have it on me. I usually am picking up 2-4 drinks, though, since I only go if I'm picking up for me and my cube-mates.

Hell No thats the same as Tipping the freaking idiot that makes your burger at McDonalds..
wtf would you tip that retard.

Do you tip the people at McDonalds who put your hamburger together and give it to you? What about other fast food restaurants wher eyou walk up to a counter, order, and walk away. That's rediculous.

Ha, just read the post above mine and saw he said the same thing. oh well. Great minds think alike.

no, you guys just eat too much McDonalds.

😛

in the UK its fairly simple, anything take away u dont tip. If i eat in a restaurant i check my receipt, if it says service charge included then generally i wont tip as well because they have already added to the bill, if however the waiter/waitress is very good then i might tip a little more. If service charge has not already been added then i will normally tip, if the service was poor i wont, if it was just service then around 5-10%, if the service was very good then mebbe 15%. If i have just a coffee/tea and cake in a cafe type place then i wont normally tip as certainly in central Londont they already charge you an arm and a leg for one of those choca-mocha-lattechino type things and a sliver of sponge....lol They mostly employ family members and rake the money in from the dumb tourists....also all they did was serve me at a counter, few of them bring the coffee/cake to the table. If However it was like in Plup Fiction and she wanders around offering extra coffee or seeing if you want more food, then i would be happy to tip in the same level i do with the restaurant. Thing is, in London the minimum wage is actually not all that bad, if your single, if your a working mother with kids etc then its probably not quite so great, but u can claim all sorts of social benefits and you can end up with more income than someone working as a manager in an office in some instances!
