Are you supposed to keep old bills?

They just clutter up, that is all they do. I have never had to refer back to one in the 5 years I have been living alone. I am thinking about shredding them all.

go to a vending machine
get lots of quarters
go to your bank
watch them sort it with the machine
get money in account
ask for money in $2 bills

there, you get free entertainment, more free entertainment, and novelty items, all in one.

I know the feeling.... I've got some bank statement all the way back to when I first opened the account, in 1996, and pretty much all of the credit card statements and receipts I've ever received.

I know this sounds stupid, but what exactly is a cancelled check, anyway? A check I cancelled? A bad check I wrote? Why would I cancel a check, and why would I want to keep it for 7 years?

You send someone a check, but then decide that you made a mistake. You call your bank and tell them not to cash a check of such number in this amount.

A cancelled check is any check that has been paid. "Cancelled" simply means that it canot be used again, or paid on again. Most banks no longer send you back your cancelled checks, but keep them on microfilm if you need them.

Um, no. That would be a stop-payment.

I have never gotten one from my bank.

Yeah, like I said, they stopped sending them back a few years ago. Most will send them to you for a fee.
